Animal abuse is defined as either the physical mistreatment of an animal or neglect where the animal is denied basic necessities of care. The mistreatment of animals is a serious issue within society. It often goes unreported because many people believe it is only abuse if it is intentional. This lack of understanding allows minor cases of neglect to progress into major cases that can end in the death of the animals involved. Animal abuse needs a better definition due to the results of neglect, psychological issues, and ethical components. Many cases of animal abuse are unintentional ones. These are cases of neglect. There are two basic causes to most mental disorders, genetics and environmental factors. Neglect can end up being the environmental factor that causes an animal to develop a mental or behavioral disorder. Now is when the question arises, do animals even have the capacity to develop mental illnesses? Well, according to numerous veterinarians and scientists, the answer to that is a resounding yes. Many vets are diagnosing animals with depression and giving dogs with separation anxiety xanax prescriptions, and it is working. These animals who are being diagnosed and treated for their mental illnesses are making complete 180 degree turns towards being healthy and happy again. So the negative effects that neglect has on the health of animals is real. If the animals are not catching diseases from unkempt pens, they are developing mental illnesses from the isolation of being alone in a cage all day. While the unintentional abuse of animals is sad and disheartening, the intentional abuse of animals is downright infuriating for most. The intentional abuse of animals is defined as an intentional infliction of harm or suffering on an animal. An example of this would be when the weird kid down the road hangs his neighbor's cat from a tree by its back foot and beats it with a baseball bat.
