Reader-Response Essay Author D.B. Harrop captures the injustice of the story told in A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings with his quote: “Have a big enough heart to love unconditionally, and a broad enough mind to embrace the differences that make each of us unique” (Harrop, ND, para. 1). In the tale, Gabriel Marques depicts a surreal being that is found by a couple in a small town. The story reveals not only the thoughts and opinions of the couple, but also the thoughts and actions of the community. Considering this tale’s intended audience is children, I believe the use of magical realism in conjunction with genuine hardships is intended to evoke reflection on how societies judge and treat others. A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings tells a story that evokes a feeling of sympathy for the old man for its readers. It uses surreal and magical scenarios to magnify the issues and, therefore, more effectively teach children life lessons. The tale tells of good-hearted gestures captured as the couple nurses the creature back to health yet moments where they take advantage of him by exploiting his appearance for their own gains. (Kirsner & Mandell, 2013, p. 591) Imbedded in all of the mistreatment of the man with wings were examples of how extending goodwill to another being can help both parties to flourish. Each time the couple provided any positive attention, the man regained his health and good fortune was bestowed upon them. In the beginning of the story, the man was spared from being clubbed to death and provided shelter. In return, the child recovered and the man gained some of his health back. Ultimately, the couple providing a blanket and shelter for the man allowed him to fully recover and leave. Consequently, the couple found themselves in a financially independent state and was relieved to no longer be burdened with their houseguest. (Kirsner & Mandell, 2013, p.
