A Rose for Emily: Decline Although Emily Grierson --who is from a respectable family-- is a “tradition, a duty, and a care,” she is nowhere near respected. In “A Rose for Emily” Miss Emily drastically declines in respect of her authority and has near-term mishaps along the way which has many eyeing the future for more. Miss Emily’s funeral is seen as more of an excuse for the whole town to see her house and belongings, an excuse for the men and women to enter her house and to see her laying in that casket which indeed is the only way to see her house. The town did respect her at some point but that respect grew to pity and hate and cornered Emily into the brink of insanity. The townspeople reported the smell multiple times and four men were finally sent to her house to sprinkle lime around her home, in the cellar, and in all the out buildings without Miss Emily’s consent. If the townspeople were to have left the smell be without taking action it could have caused a bigger riot, sure the townspeople intruded her home without permission but it was something that had to be done. The town started feeling sorry for her but also “vindicated” because Miss Emily is now thirty years old and still single. Her father restricted her from going anywhere near men that were of lower status which implicated her to give up. She had nothing left except the house. Then she met Homer Barron the man many people were hoping she would marry but were doubtful because he was a playboy. Miss Emily was seen buying clothing for him but no one was aware that that clothing was for his future funeral. She started going crazy and the townspeople weren’t happy nor worried about her they just pitied her. She bought arsenic for rats signifying that Homer was the said “rat.” Miss Emily lost not only her self awareness but completely lost her respect for herself and anyone trying to get close to her.
