The morning of 9/11 I wasn’t going to go to work because I had an allergy appointment, but I had an important meeting so I cancelled it. That’s actually where I was when the attacks occurred. I was in tower 2 on the 31ST floor sitting and listening to my boss Hennery talk about a new project we would be starting next Thursday. We were still tired because it was 7:45 in the morning. I’m late. The Starbucks line was long and the coffee stain is still splattered on my black skirt. I check my calendar, September 11. The city’s smog is killing me. If it wasn’t for this meeting, I’d be at my allergist getting new medication to deal with it. I take another sip of my coffee. The heat and the splash of mint I had them add, helps open up my sinuses. The towers are in the distance. I hustle across 5th amid oncoming traffic. 7:38. I might make it. As I’m walking in and go up to the 31st floor to clock in, I say “hi” to my co-worker Sarah who was running late too, and my other co-worker Lisa. We have been working together for the past 7 years. When I turned around to see the TV, I realized it was happening outside the window. Everyone sat in silence until a voice came over the intercom saying “we need to evacuate tower 2 but to not take the elevator.” We rushed to the stair way. It was crowding with people and was as hot as a sauna and about as humid as one too. The people were all trying to scurry down the stairs. Everyone had fear in her eyes and were trying to call their loved ones. People were on the phone trying to talk but kept shuddering because they were trying to hold back tears. All I could think about was the fact that I almost didn’t come to work today because of my allergy appointment. The humid, dusty air didn’t help
