1 Field Note #4 Anna Yim Arizona State University SPE 525: Measurement, Data Display, Interpretation, and Experimental Design Dr. Vanessa Fessenden Ph.D., BCBA Co-Instructor Michelle Downie (date)
2 Use single-subject experimental designs (e.g. reversal, multiple baseline, multielement, changing criterion) (D5) Module 4 introduced the concepts of D5, reversal (ABAB) design, multiple baseline, multi-element/alternating treatments design, and changing criterion design. During this module, we focused on multiple baseline and reversal ABAB designs. During a reversal (ABAB) design, the baseline conditions (A) and intervention conditions (B) are reversed with the goal of strengthening experimental control. Experimental control is demonstrated when there is a change in the dependent variable because of the independent variable, or the behavior changes once the intervention is introduced. Reversal designs are single-subject designs that can help with demonstrating a functional relation between an intervention and a behavior, (Ledford & Gast). During this module, we not only had to learn how to read a reversal design when picking a journal article, we also had to construct our own reversal graph that showed a functional relation between the intervention and behavior. By constructing our own graphs as well as identifying the graphs in other journal articles, helped us understand the reversal and multiple baseline design.
