Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The number of moles of acetyl-CoA which should be converted to malonyl-CoA in order to synthesize 1 mole of arachidic acid has to be determined.
Concept introduction:
For the synthesis of arachidic acid, in first step acetyl thioester and malonyl thioester undergoes Claisen condensation. The product of Claisen condensation undergoes reduction, dehydration and a second reduction to form a four-carbon thioester.
The four carbon thioester combines with another molecule of malonyl thioester and undergoes Claisen condensation, reduction, dehydration and a second reduction to form a six carbon thioester. The reaction can proceed to form a fatty acid of an even number of carbon atoms and repetition of sequence adds two carbon.

- The process by which cus fatty acids are converted to trans fatty acids occurs during the hydrolysis process. It arises because a small fraction of the products reform alkenes from a reaction reversal. True or False?arrow_forwardStearic acid is the common name for the C18 straight-chain, saturated fatty acid. Draw the structure of the fatty acyl-CoA that this forms (you don't have to draw out all of the atoms in coenzyme A; you can represent it as S-, and then show all of the reactions). Draw & identify all of the compounds formed when the eighteen carbon fat is converted to two molecules of acetyl-CoA and the fourteen-carbon fat via two turns of the fatty acid spiral. List the enzymes and coenzymes that are part of the pathway.arrow_forwardWhy might some food companies find it economically advantageous to advertise their products (such as corn oil and margarine) as being composed of polyunsaturated fatty acids?arrow_forward
