Introduction:
Barriers could be natural and biological barrier to immune system. Natural barriers are those which protect body from organism causing infection like skin, mucous membrane, ear was, mucus, etc.Biological barrier are those having antimicrobial molecules throughout the body that helps isn destruction of pathogens like saliva, sebum, urine, etc.
Answer to Problem 1TY
Option (e) antibodies
Explanation of Solution
Explanation/justification for the correct answer:
Option (e) antibodies. Antibodies are produced from an immune system when pathogens have crossed the first line of defense or the barrier. It is usually produced by immune system that stops antigens like bacteria, virus from harming the body.
Explanation for incorrect answer:
Option (a) skin. Skin is the outermost covering which is the primary barrier protecting from the entry of microorganisms. As this is a barrier defense, the answer is incorrect.
Option (b) secretions from skin glands. Secretions from the skin like sweat lower the pH in the skin or contain toxic lipids and wash away the microbes. As this is a barrier defense, the answer is incorrect.
Option (c) Exoskeleton. It is external skeleton that protects and supports animal body when compared to internal skeleton that protects internal organs. It is a natural barrier. So, this answer is not correct.
Option (d) mucus. The layer of the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, reproductive tract, ears, nose have mucus layer which traps dust or microbes and removes them. The saliva moves the contaminated mucous downwards to the stomach where the environment is acidic destroying the microbes. So, this answer is incorrect.
The antibodiesis not example of barrier defense asit is acquired part of immune system and not natural barrier. Hence, the correct answer is option (e).

- Figure 42.11 Which of the following statements about T cells is false? Helper T cells release cytokines while cytotoxic T cells kill the infected cell. Helper T cells are CD4+, while cytotoxic T cells are CD8+. MHC II is a receptor found on most body cells, while MHC I is a receptor found on immune cells only. The T cell receptor is found on both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells.arrow_forwardWhich of the following is a protein involved with the innate immune response? eosinophil Immunoglobulin M fibrin lysozymearrow_forwardWhich is/are false about innate and specific immunity? B cells are part of the innate immune system T cells activate B cells and cause them to undergo clonal expansion Langerhans cells are specialized to detect pathogens in the skin Eosinophils are part of the innate immune systemarrow_forward
- Which of the following is true about innate immune system? Check all that apply. Rig-I-like receptors have the advantage of recognizing viruses by interacting with their spike proteins TLR signaling includes NF-kB pathways to induce synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines TLR binds to dsDNA or ssRNA to induce interferon gene expression PRR induced secretion of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines have local and systemic effects PRR induces innate immunity; phagocytosis, inflammation, type I interferon production, and regulate adaptive immunity; DC maturation, costimulatory molecules, type I interferonarrow_forwardWhich is an example of a 1st line of defense barrier? mucus traps organisms in our mucous membranes fever speeds up the metabolism of our immune cells B and T cells target specific pathogens for destruction macrophages engulf pathogensarrow_forwardWhich of the following is true about the adaptive immune system? Check all please. Adaptive immunity develops several days after the initial infection, but eliminate pathogens in a specific manner and is saved as memory to encounter the same reinfection Adaptive immunity is improved with repeated infections with the same pathogen A robust primary adaptive immunity can be generated in the absence of innate immunity Adaptive immune cells are B cells that make antibodies and T cells that eliminate infected cells and make cytokines Dendritic cells present antigens to T cells, whereas macrophages present antigens to B cells.arrow_forward
- When describing cytokines which statement is false? Group of answer choices Cytokines can be used as therapeutics to treat viral infections Cytokines help stimulate and modulate the function of the immune system Affecting cytokine production with drugs never puts the patient at risk Cells can produce cytokines to autostimulate and/or attract immune cells Drugs can prevent cytokine productionarrow_forwardWhich of these is an incorrect description of either the adaptive or innate immune responses? Innate immunity involves both surface barriers and internal defenses. Only adaptive immunity involves defense against a specific foreign invader. Inflammation is an innate immune response but not an adaptive immune response. Chemicals are involved in adaptive immunity but not innate immunity. Immune system cells play a role in both innate and adaptive immune responses.arrow_forwardWhich of the following is true about innate immune system? Check all that apply. PAMPs recognize pathogen recognition receptors (PRRs) such as TLRs, NLRs and RLRs present on/in host cells TLRs that are expressed on cell surface are mostly recognized by viruses, whereas intracellular TLRs are recognized by bacteria PRRs can induce inflammatory response, opsonization and phagocytosis Pattern associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) are molecules such as CpG DNA, cytosolic dsDNA and RNAs made by the host cellarrow_forward
