8. Time for a physics related question: (Question 52, Section 11.2, page 784) A particle
is said to be in static equilibrium if the sum of all the forces acting on the object
are 0. In this problem, forces are shown as vectors acting on an object at the origin.
Find the force (vector), F which should to be added to achieve static equilibrium.
Describe F by giving its magnitude the angle it makes with the positive x axis.

1. You are working as a letter sorter in the Post Office. Postal regulations require that
employees' footwear must have a minimum coefficient of static friction of 0.5 on a
specified tile surface. You are wearing athletic shoes for which you do not know the
coefficient of static friction. To determine the coefficient, you imagine that there is an
emergency and start running across the room. You have a co-worker time you, and find
that you can begin at rest and move 4.23 m in 1.20 s. If you try to move faster than this,
your feet slip. Assuming your acceleration is constant, does your footwear qualify for the
postal regulation?

The problems contain key words that indicate such a simplification is being used. For example, if a surface is described as slippery, it means that we can ignore friction. Look at the previous chapters problem sets. Find five uses of these key words and explain how to interpret each case.arrow_forwardA B Let's revisit a previous problem and add the force of friction. In the figure, block A has a mass of 2.67 kg. The coefficient of kinetic friction between block A and the table is 0.210. When block B is gently released from rest, how long does it take block B to travel 0.713 m? - n the diagram, the gravitational force acting on the block is decomposed into Fparallel and Fperpendicular. The force Fparallel is along the incline plane, and the force Fperpendicular is perpendicular to the incline plane. There are two additional forces acting on the block. Frictional force, Ff (along the incline plane, opposing the motion of the block) Normal force, FN (perpendicular to the incline) Draw and label Ff and FN on the diagram. If the block is at rest, what does it say about the net force acting on the block? Write down two force equations showing the net force on the block when the block is at rest.
