To review:
The way, in which members of the given pair of groups can be recognized and differentiated from one another. Also, describe the features, the two groups in a pair share together.
a. Foraminiferans and radiolarians
b. Ciliates and dinoflagellates
c. Diatoms and brown algae
d. Plasmodial slime molds and cellular slime molds
Introduction:
a. Foraminiferans can be recognized by their external shells, made up of calcium carbonate, whereas radiolarians secrete glassy endoskeleton and possess radial symmetry.
b. Dinoflagellates can be easily recognized by their golden-brown chloroplasts, due to the presence of photosynthetic and accessory pigments. On the other hand, ciliates have numerous cilia over their cell surface and possess two types of nuclei, macronucleus, and a micronucleus.
c. Diatoms can be recognized by intricate patterns of their cell walls and their radial symmetry and bilateral symmetry. On the other hand, the brown algae have a brownish tinge due to the presence of fucoxanthin and chlorophyll in their chloroplasts.
d. Plasmodial slime molds are recognized by giant sheets of cytoplasm with numerous nuclei. Whereas, slime molds can be easily recognized by swarms of independent isolated cells.
