Concept explainers
To describe: The reason why CFU is more applicable to a culture of Streptococcus than to a culture of E. coli.
Introduction: The culture medium or growth medium is a liquid, solid, or semisolid designed to support the growth of cells or microorganisms. The microbial culture is defined as the propagation of the microorganism in a culture or growth medium under controlled laboratory conditions. Explanation of Solution
The colony-forming unit is used to measure the number of viable fungal and bacterial cells in a sample. Streptococcus is spherical-shaped or Gram-positive bacteria that belong to the family Streptococcaceae. Streptococcus forms chains and multiple cells may make up a colony. Thus, the colony-forming units are more applicable to a culture of Streptococcus than to a culture of E. coli that do not form chains.
