Textbook Question
Chapter 17, Problem 1SA
Define an electrolyte and its role in battery operation.
Expert Solution & Answer
To determine
The role of electrolyte in a battery.
Explanation of Solution
A battery is a primary source of electrical power in an auto vehicle. It converts the chemical energy into electrical energy. A battery consists of two electrode or plates of which one is considered as a cathode and other an anode and an electrolyte solution.
An electrolyte is a chemical solution having both the cathode and anode plates submerged into it. The electrolyte in a battery reacts with the metal of the submerged plates. This chemical reaction causes a lack of electrons on a positive plate and an excess on negative. Due to which the electrons moves and the current starts flowing.
