The Company asks for your assistance in maintaining a secure and safe work environment for all. The Company’s pledge to provide a safe and healthy work environment bans smoking on Company properties, including but not limited to break areas, bathrooms, and work areas. Employees who smoke will be able to do so only on break and lunch times. They will have to go outside of the Company’s facility in the designated smoking areas on the property. The Company is pledged to providing a work environment that is free from any acts of violence. In upholding this pledge, the Company has established a rule that provides “zero tolerance” for any acts of violence against customers, visitors, employees, or any other person who has contact with employees while performing their duties. The Company’s goal is to have zero work-related illnesses or injuries. However, in order to attain this goal, it will require a team effort involving both the Company and the employees. Only through such a coordinated effort can this safety plan be established and sustained. The health issues associated with smoking include lung cancer and other terminal illnesses, and shortness of breath. Employers have a duty of care to their employees and should not promote smoking in the workplace. It is in the best interest of the company that staff members remain healthy so that there is a decrease in sick days and absenteeism and and increase in a productive workforce. Smoking is unacceptable inside premises as passive smoking has been clinically proven to be harmful. It has become law that smoking inside a workplace or restaurants is not allowed.

It is one thing to mandate that employees not smoke on premises. It is another thing to mandate that employees not smoke at all; is it legal for employer to mandate this? Is it discrimination? In short, yes. All over Springfield there are laws prohibiting employees from using tobacco products, not only cigarettes, my place of employment is one of them. According to the executive summary of Smoke-free Workplace Laws (2009) not only is it legal to enforce policies that promote a smoke-free work environment. Allowing smoking at work, if the effects are severe enough to threaten employee health, might constitute a violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Act. The argument here is that it provides an unsafe work environment for non-smokers
Patient safety is a critical part of quality care, and there is no question that how significant patient safety is. Every day we face several complex matters regarding patient care that forces us to think and act carefully. “Stories of patients having the wrong surgery performed, the wrong medication being administered, or dying from hospital acquired infections are too often the lead story on news programs” (Gomez, 2014). However, to bring down the percentage of safety risk, requires an organization that understanding and supporting a culture of safety in the workplace. Communication between the team is very crucial, also focusing on providing feedback on potential areas of concern help patient safety.
