2.4 - Assignment: Review Questions Chapter 3: 1.The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) publishes a report card every four to five years grading the condition of sixteen infrastructural systems that are vital to the US. Unfortunately, America’s 2013 GPA is a D+ (which is actually up from the 2009 GPA of D-). Visit the ASCE report card web site at http://www.infrastructurereportcard.org/ (Links to an external site.) , select one the sixteen that you feel provides the most risk to global logistics and SCM. Write a brief discussion (no more than ½ page) supporting your claim. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimates that more than 95% (by volume) of overseas trade produced or consumed by the United States moves through our ports. To sustain and serve a growing economy and compete internationally, our nation’s ports need to be maintained, modernized, and expanded. While port authorities and their private sector partners have planned over $46 billion in capital improvements from now until 2016, federal funding has declined for navigable waterways and landside freight connections needed to move goods to and from the ports. Our ports serve as a critical entry point for a majority of imports, and allow U.S. businesses to access global markets and to …show more content…
imports arrived to the U.S. by water in 2010, valued at over $940 billion Ports are the most important aspect of global logistics because most cargo comes by way of shores for global logistics. 2.Using the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) grading system (see Ch 3, problem 1 above) and in the context of your conclusions from Ch 1, problem 1, assign a letter grade to each of the following infrastructures from a worldwide (global) infrastructure perspective. Defend your grade for each. What is your worldwide GPA? a. Ports C b. Canals and waterways

Throughout the course of history there have been many advances in the world of infrastructure, mostly occurring in the 1800’s and the 1900’s. Infrastructure is defined as the basic physical and organizational structure needed for the operation of a society or enterprise, or the services and facilities necessary for an economy to function. This definition shows how important infrastructure is to people’s lives today. It affects how people live, travel, and communicate with one another. Three men who made huge contributions in the world of infrastructure were Robert Moses, Richard Ravitch and Othmar Hermann Ammann. All three of these men were involved in designing numerous landmarks, highways, bridges, tunnels, and other forms of infrastructure that today we take for granted. Although all of these men were involved in infrastructure in the New York metropolitan area, their contributions, personalities, and the public’s opinion of them were all different.

The Obama administration must conduct a single comprehensive assessment of our nation’s infrastructure. This survey would link the information that already exists within the agencies so it would look systematically at the needs and vulnerability of U.S. transportation, electricity, water, ports and other strategic infrastructure and identify pressing infrastructure needs nationwide. The survey would then help the administration develop a strategy to promote efficient and rapid deployment of advanced infrastructure at the national

We look at competition and positioning of these ports with respect to shippers and their geographic location on the European continent. We separately consider their linkages with U.S. ports of entry; finally, we also look at port traffic from the angle of the types of commodity handled. Each analysis produces a functional space of European forwarding ports from one of the three perspectives. All three perspectives are also brought together in a synthetic analysis of inter-port competition.
Since its beginning, the point system and many other parts of the L.E.E.D. certification process have been criticized by architects, building contractors, and environmental activists. Many have complained that it has too many loopholes to be put through serious consideration, and that the certification process is wasteful and ineffective at achieving true green credibility. As a result, the USGBC has continued to modify the L.E.E.D. certification process. There are five rating systems that address multiple project types. Firstly is Building Design and Construction (BD+C). This system applies to buildings that are being newly constructed or going through a major renovation. Some examples of major renovation are new construction, core and shell, retail, schools, hospitality, data centers, warehouse and distribution centers, and health care. Secondly is Interior Design and Construction (ID+C), This system applies to projects that are a complete interior fit-out; like commercial interiors, retail, and hospitality. Thirdly is Building Operations and Maintenance (O+M). This system applies to existing buildings that are undergoing improvement work or little to no construction. These types of maintenance include existing buildings, schools, retail, hospitality, data centers, warehouse and distribution centers. Fourthly is Neighborhood Development (ND), This system applies to new land development projects or redevelopment projects containing residential uses,
However, after almost one complete year of operation, ports in South Carolina are witnessing growth of 9.4% in terms of volumes handled, while ports in Georgia and Virginia, which rank among the country’s largest, broke all records during May, as stated in Bloomberg. Alabama is also reporting larger container ships and volumes, partly on the back of shipping lines Maersk and Mediterranean Shipping Co. now providing a weekly service to Asia. The chief executive of South Carolina Ports Authority even expressed astonishment at the extent of the upturn in demand at his state’s ports. One of the major factors behind this upturn in trade at southern American ports is undoubtedly the widened Panama Canal, although other factors, such as a booming population in the South and an uplift in US manufacturing also contribute to the uptick in shipments.
The Economy in New Zealand is highly dependant on internationally imported goods. New Zealand mainly imports its good from Australia, China and USA. Goods that are mainly imported are vehicles and petroleum, which in this case is one of the major goods that are cargoed into New Zealand (Aapa-ports.org, 2014). This business report has been put together to analyse the ports industry, specifically the seaport industry to check if investing in this industry will be a good choice. The report will briefly look at the Port Of Auckland Limited (POAL) to help with the decision, information such as annual report (POAL), as well as the seaport industry of New Zealand to help backup the information supplied, the tools that will be used to analyse the industry are PEST analysis and the Porters five forces of competition
India is on the threshold of hectic development in infrastructure and is in a tearing hurry to make up for lost time as it tries to catch up with the developed world to achieve a better standard of living. It is here that I hope to contribute to a more conscientious development agenda that will have minimal effects on future generations. Watching a country blossom with new mega-structures and cities is an opportunity that comes once every few generations and structural engineering will form the center stage of engineering development. Ever since childhood, I was curious about how things were shaped in the world. When I visited towns and cities I was always stuck staring at physical structures – be it an ancient monument or a daunting skyscraper. Fortunately, I had patient members in my family who explained the intricacies that ensured my
