Running Head: Teaching Strategies GOLD Teaching Strategies GOLD: On the Spot Teaching Strategies GOLD is an ongoing observational system for assessing children birth through kindergarten based on 38 developmental and learning objectives ( Burts, Berke, Baker, Bickart, Tabors, & Sanders , 2013). The objectives cover 10 areas of development including social-emotional; physical; language; cognitive; literacy; mathematics; science and technology; social studies; the arts; and English language acquisition. There are multiple assessments available within Teaching Strategies, of which we will discuss the On-the-Spot Observational Recording Tool optional assessment. On-the-Spot is basically a checklist which allows teachers to collect quick data on one or multiple children focused on 13 (Objectives 4, 5, 6, 7, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23) of the 38 objectives. The areas of observation included in On-the-Spot are: 1) alphabet knowledge; 2) counting; 3) numerical identification; 4) shapes; 5) colors; 6) patterns; 7) classification; 8) uses positional words; 9) uses scissors; 10) uses drawing and writing tools; and 11) demonstrates fine motor skills. These items are measured in the fall, winter and spring of the school year on each student based on teacher observations. Reliability and Validity. Researchers found strong evidence for inter-rater reliability and construct validity (Teaching Strategies GOLD, 2013). Researchers also found that the Teaching Strategies GOLD demonstrates moderate to high correlations with the Bracken School Readiness Assessment (Teaching Strategies GOLD, 2013). Appropriately administered Teaching Strategies GOLD. This instrument was used observing a PreK student in Iberville Parish. The student had already completed the
Running Head: Teaching Strategies GOLD fall and winter sessions. The observer assisted the interventionist in implementing the spring session. As seen on the instrument (see appendix), the student grew over time in ability to count. All alphabets were acknowledge but the child still did not know his middle name. The student remained steady with same or similar scores from winter to spring (end-of-year). Summary of On-the-Spot. Overall, this particular student is considered high performing. With very few weak areas on the On-the-Spot observation tool, there are no real areas of concern for this student.
