HSE480 Final Project HSE 480: Human Services Capstone Kristen Apel Southern New Hampshire University Community Needs and Problem
RUNNING HEAD TITLE (SHORTENED) 2 Community Overview The community chosen for this proposal is Saint Louis Missouri. The population in the City of Saint Louis in 2023 was 281,754 people and in Saint Louis County was 987,059 people (U.S. Census Bureau, 2023). The household median income in Saint Louis in 2022 was $78,067 for county and $52,941 for city (U.S. Census Bureau, 2022). Regarding the race in Saint Louis city and county it is different when it comes to each. For St. Louis County there are 67.1% of whites whereas in the city it is 49.5%, for African Americans there are 25.2% in the county and in the city 43.7%. Both white and African Americans make up a majority of the city and county population. While there are other races located in the areas most are .2% to 4.5% which is vast difference. Saint Louis is located in the Central East of Missouri. Saint Louis borders Illinois and is in close proximity to Springfield Illinois, Grantie City Illinois, and other smaller towns. Saint Louis has county which includes smaller towns such as Hazelwood, Maryland Heights, Creve Coeur, Florissant, and Fenton to name a few. Whereas Saint Louis city is more of a smaller location near the Missouri/Illinois border that hosts our downtown areas. They are separate when it comes to government funding as well as police, fire, EMS and all other political figures. Overview of the Problem According to the Saint Louis Coalition to End Homelessness, the number of people sleeping outside in St Louis County and City were 5,142 at the beginning of the year and 4,860 around the end of the year in 2023. Approximately 450 people are homeless on a given night in the county and 949 in the city. According to the U.S Census Bureau the percentage of people in poverty are 10.5% in St. Louis County, and 21.3% in St. Louis City. The Saint Louis Housing Authority is an agency that could be helpful in addressing the issue of homelessness, while the public libraries in both the city and county can be a safe place to the homeless to be able to stay warm, us a public restroom and even find out resources to help them in their situation. It would be smart to engage with the St. Louis Coalition to End
RUNNING HEAD TITLE (SHORTENED) 3 Homelessness to be able to develop, collaborate and effective approach to lower the rate of homelessness in St. Louis city and county.
