1 Styles Of Policing Jasmine Swiger Southern New Hampshire University Criminal Justice 205: Policing in The United States Professor Ron Lugo January 21, 2024
2 Watchman Style-Situation: “This style is primarily concerned with order maintenance—maintaining order and controlling illegal and disruptive behavior” (Dempsey, 2019. Pg 140. Para 2.) This means officers in a watchman style tend to ignore a lot of smaller violations, especially when it is concerned with traffic violations or run ins with juveniles. They make very minimal formal arrest, instead they like to use persuasion and rough up the people who are being disruptive. This usually occurs in departments that have very little formal training, lower education requirements, and low wages. These types of officer’s work at maintaining the peace. These types of police can be generally found in heavenly populated areas such as big cities like L.A. An example of this style of policing would be a group of teenagers skateboarding on private property. With this style of policing the juveniles would be spoken to and let off with a warning and maybe even watched to ensure they left the property. Culture Based on Watchman Style: The culture of the Watchman Style focuses more on keeping the peace within their community rather than facing and solving a problem, no matter how big or small the violation. This can cause confusion as the agency has standards that are upheld by all employees of the agency. The Watchman Style also changes as the culture changes, just as Law Enforcement will. This style is not effective because it is not actually solving any problems, and it can create distribution within the community. Legalistic Style-Situation: “This style enforces the letter of the law strictly by issuing many citations and making many misdemeanor arrests.” (Dempsey, 2019. Pg 140. Para 3.) This style focuses on enforcement of
3 the law and making many arrests. This style of police officers focus on upholding the law to the highest extent. They also focus on many smaller violations such as traffic violations and noise disturbances with little to no discretion. A lot of times this style of policing comes in after a scandal of Watchman style of policing within the department. They conduct themselves in a very professional manner and apply the law equally to everyone across the board. An example of this style policing would be an officer responding to a noise complaint at a college party, instead of speaking with the college students and asking them to keep down the noise and possibly lower the music and letting them off with a warning, they would issue citations for noise disturbance to the members of the party, or potentially make arrests. Culture Based on Legalistic Style: The culture based on this style of policing would be that the law is enforced almost always when an offense or crime is committed. This type of policing believes that the law should be followed in one way by everyone with little to no exceptions. They often have the highest arrest rates and are a very well-respected department as they are seen to be doing this properly and with accuracy. This is often adopted by State Police. Service-Style Situations: “In this style the emphasis is on serving the needs of the community. The officers see themselves more as helpers than as soldiers in a war against crime.” (Dempsey, 2019. Pg 140. Para 4.) Service Style is more likely to focus on crimes such as burglary, crimes that violate citizens privacy rather than focusing on minor infractions and violations. They prioritize all requests for police assistance and these officers are more likely to be put into places that are low in crime rate such as middle-upper class areas.

4 An example of this style policing would be getting the community involved in how they can better the department and keep them safer, and getting the communities opinion on what can or will keep the department running smoothly and the community members safe. Culture Based on Service Style: Although smaller communities usually have service style police officers, due to their ability to aid to the community due to the extremely low crime rates. I think all areas lower and middle class included should use this style of policing. This would make for a safer community, along with lower crime rates and overall, a better place to live in.
