Jaycee Goldsmith 10/30/23 BBST 103 Professor Foster SIM #7 For this SIM paper, I was required to read Micah 6:1-8. I pray to God to apply these Words of God to my day to day life. The genre of Micah 6:1-8 is prophecy. There are three interpretative principles to keep in mind while reading this scripture. These principles are that the prophets were creative Covenant Enforcers, knowing the historical context is extremely important, and we need to know the difference between foretelling and forthtelling. 1 Foretelling is asking what is on the horizon whereas forthtelling is what God needs His people to know right at that moment. The big idea of this passage is there is nothing we can do, no words or actions that can prove our worth to the Lord. He is the one who redeems us and all He asks of us in return is to love mercy, act justly, and walk humbly alongside Him. One thing I noticed when reading through the recommended commentaries was that the book of Micah was written by Micah and only Micah. One of the historical pieces I learned about this book is that Micah's reign was during the time of Ahaz, Jotham, and Hezekiah who were all kings of Judah. This was also right before the time of the fall of Samaria in 722 BC, which Micah actually predicted during his ministry. 2 Similar to every other writing prophet, Micah has a very strong desire to have justice for society, whether it be through the proper administration of justice in the courts or through fairness in the marketplace. 3 In verse 8 of this scripture it says that God has already shown us what is “good” and that He commands us to “act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly.” This not only applied to what was happening between the 1 Walt Russell, Playing With Fire (Colorado Springs: NavPress, 2000), 189-192. 2 Thomas Finley, Joel, Obadiah, and Micah (Chicago: Moody Press), 110-171 3 Finley, 115.
Northern and Southern Kingdoms during that time, but also applies to our society today. In another commentary I read, it discussed how we should have loving kindness because that is one of the principal attributes of God, specifically throughout the Old Testament. God’s love for His people is one of His biggest attributes, so He asks His people to act in that same loving kindness towards one another. 4 In the verses it specifically tells us to do and how to do so. Digging deeper into the big idea sentence of Micah 6:1-8, no matter what we do in life, or how many sins we commit, we don’t have to apologize to God because He already saved and redeemed us. In verse 4 of this scripture, He tells His people, “I brought you up out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery.” This still applies to us today. Because of Him, we are no longer slaves to sin. God does so much for us and asks nothing of us except to be humble, loving, and to devote our lives to Him. While in lectio , one of my biggest takeaways was that God’s love for us is unconditional, which means He doesn’t only offer His love under certain conditions, it is always there and He is always there. There is no thought or action that can make Him love us any more or any less. He loves us where we are and where we will be. However, we are still called to live our lives worthy of Chris and to do what He asks of us. To apply this to this scripture specifically, we are called to love each other the way God loves us. This means we must love each other regardless of the circumstances, even with the people that we don't necessarily like. As a follower of Christ, in lectio , I found that I need to love and give and not expect anything in return. God will give me what I deserve. The type of unconditional love God gives us is called agape love. This is the type of love that we need to have for both the Lord and for others. The way I plan to apply Micah 6:1-8 to my life is that I will pray for God to overfill me with His love so that I may pour that love into the lives of everyone else around me. I also plan on praying for patience. God is so patient with me and loves me unconditionally. I think in my life I need to have better patience. I am a person that gets annoyed and upset with others easily. 4 Peter C.Craigie , Twelve Prophets (Philadelphia: The Westminster Press), 46-47.
This is the exact opposite of what God is asking of me to do in these verses. He is asking me to be patient and love everyone the way He loves me. This is along the lines of forgiveness too. I need to pray to God to show me how to love and forgive just as He does for me. To begin applying this to my life, I need to start with anyone I become upset with, before feeding into any negativity the devil pulls me towards, I will play for them and talk with God on how He would handle the situation instead.
