1 Week 5 Assignment Name PSY101 Dr. Evan Schwartz November 24, 2023
2 Week 5 Assignment Part One: Biology and the Mind 1. Discuss how Zoe’s brain is contributing to her feelings of happiness and motivation after receiving a good grade and positive feedback on her psychology assignment. Identify specific neurotransmitters that are likely involved. There are several types of neurotransmitters. Zoe's brain is contributing feelings of happiness and motivation after receiving positive feedback on her psychology assignment because her dopamine, and serotonin Neurotransmitter are letting her feel pleasure of reward, motivation, and desire. They are not acting alone; they have the help of neurons and synapses (Harper, 1). 2. Explain what the autonomic nervous system is. Then discuss how Zoe’s autonomic nervous system was involved during and after her response to the sound of the fallen pan of lasagna. It is a part of your overall nervous system that controls the autonomic functions of your body that you need to survive. This is part of your brain to most of your internal organs. These are processes you don't think about and that your brain manages while you're awake or asleep. (clevelandclinic,1). The autonomic nervous system is divided into two parts, one of them activates the body's reflex and high stress situations to get better prepared to move quickly. When she heard the lasagna that part of her brain initiated (Harper, 1). Part Two: Human Development 3. Discuss how Zoe’s brain was developing between age 17 and now. Be sure to include specific brain structures in your response. Explain how these changes in Zoe’s brain can explain her behavior around her high school friends. As we progress from our adolescence at 17 years old to entering the phase of middle adulthood, our brains experience ongoing growth and establish vital connections, enabling us to constantly expand our knowledge and understanding. (Harper, 1) (Perez,2021). Prefrontal cortex is a region in the frontal lobe that is associated with planning, decision-making, and regulating social behaviors.(Harper, 1). Zoe's behavior around her high school friends can be explained by the maturation of her prefrontal cortex. Additionally, the limbic system is flooded with dopamine, making short-term rewards feel more meaningful to teenagers, especially when they’re around their friends. (1)(Albert & Steinberg, 1),(1).  4. How did Tori’s weekly talks likely contribute to Zoe’s identity development?
3 Tori's weekly talks likely contributed to Zoe's identity development by providing a safe and supportive environment for Zoe to explore and express her thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Participating in these discussions greatly contributed to Zoe's self-discovery, reinforcing her core values and empowering her to define her own path, ultimately crafting her unique personal identity. Moreover, Tori's ongoing interaction and guidance could have provided Zoe with a valuable role model to aspire to, thereby exerting a stronger influence on her overall identity development. Part Three: Memory 5. Explain what encoding failure is and how it can account for Zoe’s low grade on the practice quiz. Encoding is the processing of information into neural signals that can be stored in the brain and nervous system. The main reason for the failure is that it does not automatically store all the encoded information. And that's why we can't always retrieve information that's unimportant or outdated (Evans, 3) 6. Explain why Zoe is more likely to understand and remember what she read the second time, when she uses active study strategies. Be sure to include specific concepts, or topics, from this chapter in your response. Zoe's utilization of active study strategies enhances her understanding and retention of the material, making it more probable for her to comprehend and recall what she reads on the second attempt. Summarizing information making connections , and  self-testing This is supported by the concept of depth of processing, which suggests that the more mental effort we put into understanding and organizing information, the better we remember it. Part Four: Emotion 7. Identify the three components of emotions. Then discuss how Zoe experiences each component in this scenario. What are her physical symptoms, thoughts, and behaviors? The three components of emotions are physiological arousal (heart rate goes up), expressive behaviors (behavior expression), and Conscious experiences (feeling of fear). (Harper, 1) Zoe kept her concerns about her grade to herself, but that only caused her body to respond with tense muscles, a fast heartbeat, and an unpleasant attitude towards customers. 8. Suggest two ways that Zoe can better regulate her emotions. Which concepts, or topics, from this chapter explain why your suggestions might work? She has the ability to pause and carefully contemplate her actions before acting, while also effectively managing her emotions by calming her body. The web text presents valuable information on emotional control, suggesting that this approach could potentially yield favorable results. (Harper, 1).
