Stephanie Wing PSY 491 2-1 Milestone March 16, 2024 Describe how the motive of belonging contributes to your social change identity. Humans have an implicit needs to belong, and seeking out groups that allows us to feel accepted and wanted are desired. Whether we find these groups because of similar interests, careers or personal traits like humor or goals, there is a drive to find this sense of belonging. I struggle with this, my personality isn’t for everyone, my humor isn’t for everyone and my interests typically leave me in the outcasts in the social climate of my area. However, I was able to find my belonging when I met my husband. While we still search for social groups that fit us and allow us to feel like we belong, we have each other and the family we have created that fills this need while we wait for those who are like us to come along. Describe how the motive of understanding contributes to your social change identity. Understanding is so important, not only to my own social identity but to those in the world around us. We all have a desire to be understood, and as a result I have found myself to be misunderstood my whole life. However, I am a very understanding person. I go out of my way to try and understand people and their motives as well as the events in their lives that brought them to this moment. This is a major reason for my future career path of being a therapist. I like to understand people, I like to know what makes them who they are and how their lives have influenced who they are becoming or have become. This also leaves me alone many times however, as many don’t know how to have open and honest connections with people outside of the typical mundane and surface level interactions. These don’t interest me so it takes a select few who are interested in understanding as well for me to create bonds with. Describe how the motive of controlling contributes to your social change identity. Controlling looks different to everyone. Some may hear the word controlling and think “abusive”, “rude” or “overbearing”. However, this term isn’t always a negative. Some use their need for control to benefit not only themselves but those around them. It can be self control which translates into discipline. Which is where this relates to my social identity. I am not a controlling person. I go with the flow always. I am an “it is what it is” type of person, until it comes to my sense of self control and discipline. I have to control myself, my desires and my motives in order to achieve a higher goal. Describe how the motive of enhancing self contributes to your social change identity.
Enhancing self contributes to my social change identity by allowing me to be authentic in who I am. I don’t like to conform to what society around me deems as acceptable. Especially when living in an area whos beliefs don’t align with my own. I accept people for who they are and don’t expect them to change who they are to fit a bigger agenda. I can move forward despite the odds stacked against me and thrive even when those around me rather me stay complacent. Describe how the motive of trusting contributes to your social change identity. I am a very trusting person. I like to believe that if you are your authentic self those around you will be influenced to be authentic as well. I am also very open, leaving nothing untouchable. If you wish to know, all you must do is ask. I pride myself on this. Trust does take time and acknowledging this fact and taking the steps to ensure an alliance is built can be hard as not everyone is as trusting as me right off the git. This contributes to my social change identity as I have to be open and show those around me that I can be trusted. Describe how your knowledge of the five core social motives can help you to counter the effects of social changes. The five core social motives can help us realize who we are as a person and how it impacts the world around us. We don’t need to conform to society in an attempt to be happy, we can be our individual self and be happy regardless of what society may feel about us. We are all diverse in our own ways. We enjoy some of the same and some different things, and to be accepting of those differences and embracing them is what makes life worth living. Knowing this will allow us to be our most authentic selves and hopefully a more authentic world.
