1 Fun Intergenerational Activities! Age Group Selected: 4 Years Old Project Group: Group 5 February 27th, 2024 A brief description of your play activities The play activities we have attached below are very beneficial to both of the age groups, as well as interactive. As mentioned in this week's readings, collaborative and physical activities are very beneficial for all age groups, and develop positive growth (Vella, 2011). With this in mind, we have decided to incorporate three exciting activities into our sessions. This includes Cooking (Through the activity Top Chef), a Scavenger Hunt (Titled Robin Hood) and a drawing activity titled Picasso 101. Along with being interactive and helping build the fundamental motor skills for our 4-year-old participants, we also have physically active activities in the form of the scavenger hunt that can be used to improve the Mental Health of the elderly participants, as they can roam around as opposed to staying in the same room for an entire day (Columnist, 2011). All in all, our play activities encourage the perfect mix of creativity, physical activity, positive reinforcement, and fun for both our elderly age group and youthful age group. Activity 1: Top Chef: • Activity Objectives: To Cook a Fancy Meal with Grandma and her older friends • Materials Needed: Step 2 kitchen kit. • Activity Descriptions showing time allocation: This activity can take 45 mins to an hour (plus if the child is having fun we can extend the time). - Welcome to Top Chef, here you and Grandma will make a three-course meal at a 5 Michelin-starred restaurant. This is a race against time to make these three meals: For the appetizer; you and grandma will work together to make a carrot soup, look around the kitchen and find extra ingredients you want to add to the carrot soup. For your main meal you and grandma will be making a Grade A beef wagyu burger, what are some things you and grandma like on your burger? And finally you and grandma will be making a two-tier cake, your choice of flavour!! Each meal should take 15 minutes. GOOD LUCK!!! 1. Make 2 Carrot Soups add at least two of your favourite vegetables (one for you and one for Grandma). 2. Make 2 Burgers, what is your favourite sauce what is grandma’s favourite sauce 3. Make 2 slices of Cake, what is your favourite cake flavour? What is grandma’s? 4. Serve to your judges (other family members or members of the retirement home)
2 Activity 2: Scavenger Hunt (Robin Hood): • Activity Objectives: Find the Objects listed • Materials Needed: None (Things Around the house) • Activity Descriptions showing time allocation: This can be 55 minutes, you and Grandma are looking for things in the house. Help!!!! Robin Hood; you have to steal from the rich and give to the poor and here are some things we are looking for. 1. Red boots ( If you can't find that winter or rain boots are excepted) 2. Black Jacket 3. The letter “E” block 4. A Gray Sock 5. A hair tie 6. Toy car 7. Orange pencil 8. Green scarf 9. Red hat 10. Some are younger than Grandma
3 Activity 3: Drawing (Drawing Picasso 101): • Activity Objectives: Draw a Portrait of each other • Materials Needed: Paint, paper, brushes, crayons • Activity Descriptions showing time allocation: This can be 1 hour you and grandma will paint/draw (whatever form of art material). 1. 4 Child Benefits 1. As this age group, found in week 3, is part of the pre-operational stage of development, they often are looking to be creative and use their imagination. The activity of cooking - TopChef - will encourage them to be creative when making the food with the fake kitchen setup, as well as to collaborate with their elderly partner. 2. Having the cooking activity also encourages motor development through grasping small utensils, opening and closing doors, as well as turning different knobs (Step 2, 2020). 3. Their creativity is also being used and connected through the drawing activity where they can use various colours and styles to draw whatever comes to their mind - whether it is their grandparent/partner in the activity, or even an animal, spaceship, etc. Thus this will allow the child to be creative and express themselves. 4. In completing the cooking activity, the children will have a role model to look up to, which will allow them to have a positive authority figure that they can emulate and learn from (Columnist, 2011). This is a key benefit for the four-year-old participants as they are looking for gratification and reassurance that they are doing the activity correctly, this reassurance can, in turn, be provided by the elderly participant. 5. Completing a scavenger hunt will also benefit the children as this can be used to help teach them the basics, such as looking for letters or colours in specific areas (Linder, 2019). This developmental activity provides a fun, collaborative form of teaching as opposed to just sitting at a desk and learning different colours or letters. Adult Benefits 1. As mentioned in this week's reading, “The Role of the Coach in Facilitating Positive Youth Development: Moving from Theory to Practice”, working together with different age groups and in collaboration helps build the confidence of all participants as they have shared goals - in this case, the goal of completing a scavenger hunt or cooking a fake meal in Top Chef (Vella, 2011). Thus, a major benefit for the elderly participants will be that they can improve and develop their confidence. 2. Positive, fun and collaborative collaborations also help improve the mental health of all participants (Columnist, 2011). This indicates that participating in these activities, the elderly participants may have an overall increase in their mental well-being as they will be having fun, keeping their minds busy and working in a positive environment. 3. Being physically active and moving through the scavenger hunt will benefit the elderly participants as it keeps them moving, working their muscles and may help improve their overall physical wellness (Vella, 2011). 4. Completing activities with youthful partners may make the elderly participant feel young, and included and improve their overall mood.
