Lab #7 Exercise -------------------------------Chapter 7 Recognizing Hypothesis Testing Lab-Part 1------------------------------------- Article 1: “Body Image, Self-Objectification, and Appearance Maintenance Among College-Aged Women” 1. State the hypothesis(-es). According to the journal, the hypotheses were that “self-objectification predicts body image dissatisfaction and more negative views of one’s body, predicts greater resource investment in appearance maintenance behaviors and resource investment in appearance behaviors” (Piercy et al., 2023) 2. Identify the criteria for a decision. The criteria for the decision is the “amount of time and money that women invest in appearance maintenance behaviors” (Piercy et al., 2023) 3. Identify the test statistic. The test statistic is a paired t-test. 4. Identify the decision made by the researchers (i.e., accept or reject the null hypothesis). The decision made is to accept the null hypothesis. 5. Discuss whether or not the research was directional or non-directional. Support your response. The research is non-directional because instead of comparing the values measured, it is showing the relation between the values. 6. Calculate/Identify the effect size ( r ) for results related to the hypothesis (-es) only. The effect size (r) is 5.56398. Article 2: “Tweet Your Heart Out: The Personality Correlates and Affective Consequences of Social Media Use on Close Relationships and Psychological Health” 1. State the hypothesis(-es). According to the journal, the hypotheses were that “Social media use will be correlated with lower levels of close relationship satisfaction, increased feelings of loneliness, and personality traits will be correlated with social media use” (White et al., 2023). 2. Identify the criteria for a decision. The criteria for a decision were the measures of personality using the big five inventory. (White et al., 2023) 3. Identify the test statistic. The test statistic is two-tailed test. The effect size (r) for the results is 29. ----------------------------------Chapter 7 Understanding Effect Sizes Lab-Part 2---------------------------------------- 1. What is the effect size ( r ) according to the calculator? According to the calculator, the effect size is 0.9271726499455306. 2. How would we describe these effects (small, medium, or large)? These effects are large because the d value is large.
