SUMMARY The problem is that student become busier with athletics, music lessons, and other extracurricular activities, life skills tend to take a back seat. As a result, students sometimes graduate without an awareness of what it takes to function on their own[ CITATION Mal19 \l 1033 ]. This problem is becoming more prevalent across America. High schools focus primarily on academic information and not enough developing life skills. Instituting a mentoring program in high school that teaches these skills can help these students greatly. This will allow student to be able to function properly earlier in life, which will allow them the opportunity to be successful earlier in life. There has a lot of conversations about how to help young adult develop life skills and here is a way to help solve the issue. 2 | Page
PROBLEM Life skills have been identified as an essential resource for developing psychosocial, emotional, cognitive, behavioral and resilience skills to negotiate everyday challenges and productive involvement in the community. Most high school graduates are not equipped with all the skills needed to properly handle all of the challenges of life. There is a growing demand to educate adolescents with the life skills to help them deal with their day to day life skills challenges and transition into adulthood with informed healthy choices[ CITATION Nas18 \l 1033 ]. High schools are not teaching student these nor is it incorporated into the curriculum. High school are only teaching student how to pass standardized test. Teachers or not are completely concerned with if the material they’re teaching is preparing them to handle real life problems. These students are being thrust into the real world and are basically told to sink or swim. This put them behind in life as they accumulate debt and struggle to find and keep jobs. This also hinders their development as person because they do not how to properly balance all the new responsibilities that have thrown at them all at once. 3 | Page

SOLUTION Positive thinking courses in high school can provide them with the tools for lifelong personal and professional achievement[ CITATION Why19 \l 1033 ]. Starting a mentoring program that goes into high schools and teaches student life skills that are not taught. Their will classes taught at least once a month and up to one class a week. In addition to the classes being taught during the school week there will more classes offered on the weekends that will go more in depth on the topics. Some of the topics that will be covered by these classes are money management, cooking, vehicle maintenance and repair, time management, personal credit and credit cards, home repairs, and tools for find a job. To efficiently integrate the mentor program into the schools we would partner closely with the teacher and the administration team. This means working around teachers schedules and getting enough time to properly teach and cover the material. 4 | Page
BENEFITS If schools want to prepare their students for a successful future, then life skills should be definitely be part of their curriculum. This mentoring program will benefit the students mostly. They are getting the skills that they so desperately in need of. They are will be getting the proper skills to handle the life challenges that will be thrown their way. With that being said, students will be better equipped to handle the challenges and stress of college. This will decrease the likelihood that they will drop or flunk out school. This will increase the number of college graduates which in turn will boost the economy. Employers also benefit from this program, as they get better equipped and more skilled workers. Forbes created a lost of life skills that employers look for in potential applicants[ CITATION Mal19 \l 1033 ]. 5 | Page
COSTS There will be no cost associated with this mentoring program. The mentors for the program will be volunteers and will be not be getting paid. The classes will be taught in the classrooms at high schools. The only cost that could come this program would be if the program outgrows the standard high school classroom setting. If that were to happen then the program would partner with the high school to rent/buy a space to hold these classes. This would also require the hiring of employees to help run the program. 6 | Page
