Describe the ways in which grit, resilience, and coping skills are essential to any advocacy effort. According to researchers at the Methodist University Hospital, Stoffel & Cain (2018), the concepts of grit and resilience are used to describe “the ability to persevere through hardships to meet goals.” Although two completely different constructs, resilience and grit are often used interchangeably, with grit being defined as perseverance and passion towards long-term goals and maintaining and sustained commitment, and resilience referring to one’s ability to bounce back after experiencing adversity (Stoffel & Cain, 2018). Regarding advocacy, grit fuels advocates to persist in the face of setbacks, criticism, or obstacles that often come with advocacy work. In a similar manner, resilience acts as a shield against burnout, allowing for advocates to again, bounce back from adversity, setbacks, or failures, sustaining their commitment to the overall cause despite difficult circumstances. When individuals are doing any type of work that requires a vast amount of grit and resilience, they also must have the ability to take care of themselves and cope properly with the challenges that come alongside advocacy, which is where coping skills become a crucial element to success. Possessing strong coping skills well-equips advocates with the ability to manage stress, uncertainty, and the emotional toll that comes with advocating for change. Altogether, these traits aid an advocate’s ability to weather adversity, maintain dedication, and continue to make strides towards achieving their advocacy goals despite the challenges encountered along the way. Describe how you would apply the principles of emotional intelligence for collaboration in your advocacy efforts. Emotional intelligence is widely thought of as the “ability to identify and regulate your own feelings, and the feelings of people around you” (Lundin, 2023). Applying the principles of
emotional intelligence in advocacy efforts for collaboration involves cultivating self-awareness to understand one’s emotions and reactions. Through having the ability to recognize my own strengths, weaknesses, and triggers, I become a better advocate, fostering empathy and understanding towards the perspective of others involved throughout the collaborative process. Just as important, social awareness aids in perceiving and comprehending the emotions and needs of fellow collaborators, facilitating better communication and the ability to navigate conflicts constructively. Overall, utilizing emotional intelligence principles as a foundation for my advocacy efforts will help to better regulate my emotions and maintain composure all while creating a supportive and respectful atmosphere that reflects open dialogue. Describe the psychology subdisciplines that are most relevant to the interdisciplinary nature of your advocacy efforts. Psychology subdisciplines encompass a diverse range of specialties, each offering unique perspectives that are crucial to the interdisciplinary nature of advocacy efforts. Social psychology investigates how individuals’ thoughts, behaviors, and emotions are influenced by social contexts and group dynamics, providing insights into societal attitudes, prejudices, and behavior (Cherry, 2022). I feel as though this subdiscipline is relevant to my advocacy efforts, as understanding social psychology creates a foundation for developing advocacy strategies and understanding the impact of social change initiatives. Additionally, developmental psychology covers human growth and change across the lifespan, shedding much light on the needs of different age groups within communities and how childhood experiences influence the development of an individual (Cherry, 2023). As someone who is pursuing a career as a psychotherapist and hoping to specialize in trauma and eating disorders, this subdiscipline is a huge aspect of my advocacy

efforts, as it is important to understand the impact that development has on an individual’s life, especially with diverse populations. Describe the ways in which your knowledge of psychology has prepared you to execute your social change initiative. My knowledge of psychology has played a pivotal role in preparing to execute my social change initiative through providing insights into human behavior, motivations, and social dynamics. Understanding psychological principles has enabled the advocate inside myself, allowing a greater understanding regarding underlying factors behind societal issues and fostering empowerment in developing effective strategies for creating change. Through psychological knowledge, I have gained valuable insight as to how individuals perceive and respond to social issues, barriers to change within the community and individuals, as well as coming up with approaches that resonate with diverse audiences. Additionally, due to gaining an understanding of group psychology and communication techniques, I can now utilize communication strategies that inspire action while also fostering empathy, which are essential factors in driving meaningful societal transformation. In my experience, applying psychological insights facilitates more empathetic, strategic, and impactful advocacy efforts by recognizing the complex nature of social problems and the intricate relationship between individual attitudes, societal structures, and behavioral change. With all of that being said, I have no doubt in my mind that all the knowledge I have gained throughout the course of studying psychology has prepared me to execute social change initiative throughout my life.
