2 Personality Disorder’s There is a valid rationale for assigning a diagnosis of personality disorder, in my perspective. This belief stems from the acknowledgment that certain life events can significantly influence an individual's behavior for a substantial portion of their lives. When someone undergoes traumatic or repetitive experiences that alter their thought processes to an extent causing internal conflicts, it becomes essential to offer an explanation for these changes. This is particularly relevant when a lasting shift in behavior results from a medical condition, traumatic event, or disease (Harrigan, 2016). Understanding the origins of specific behaviors or beliefs exhibited as symptoms, and how they interconnect with a personality disorder, can be crucial when working with an individual. Personality disorders are intricately linked to an individual's life experiences, encompassing both positive and negative aspects. The presence or absence of certain elements in an individual's life inevitably shapes their responses and prompts adjustments to balance these experiences. These encounters may stem from biological factors such as diseases, a familial history of ailments, or organic traumas, which are not always controllable but adaptable. For instance, when faced with a serious illness, interventions may be implemented to control or cure the ailment, albeit with potential lasting effects. While the experience may not have been preventable, actions taken to address the issue can modify a person's behaviors to avoid a recurrence of a similar biological encounter. Considering environmental factors is equally crucial, acknowledging that individuals are shaped by their surroundings. This aligns closely with the age-old debate of nature versus nurture. Individuals adjust their behaviors to align with their environment, ensuring survival or thriving within their given circumstances. Therefore,
3 certain experiences or environmental factors may influence how a person interacts with others in their adult years, often reflecting the impact of their childhood experiences (Harrigan, 2016).
