3-2 Discussion: Psychological Studies in the Media Before answering the questions below, review the following resources: Reading: Reconciling the Role of Serotonin in Behavioral Inhibition and Aversion: Acute Tryptophan Depletion Abolishes Punishment-Induced Inhibition in Humans (peer- reviewed journal article) Video: Beware Neuro-Bunk (11:03) Reading: The Cheesy Secret Behind Successful Decision Making (popular media article) For your initial post, answer the following questions: How did the authors of the peer-reviewed journal article summarize their own work versus the journalist's summary in the popular media article? o The peer-reviewed journal article was written in the APA-style report, with a Title, Abstract, Introduction, Method, Results, Discussion, and References section. Each element contained information vital to the research, stating all the experiments they conducted, making it easy for the reader to find and refer to the research. The authors provide figures, data, statistics, methods, whereas the journalists' summary in the popular media article contains non-peer-reviewed study statistics and findings not based on scientific principles. The journalist's summary in the popular media article was an article with main ideas and keywords in the article where they left out all the research and critical facts. Imagine you are summarizing a peer-reviewed journal article for a general audience. To avoid the oversights in the popular media article, what one central point would you ensure was communicated accurately to a general audience? o In summarizing a peer-reviewed journal article for a general audience, in order to avoid the oversights in the popular media article, the central point I would ensure that I would communicate accurately to the general audience would be the validity, reliability, and accuracy of the study along with how well the researcher measured the variables of the study. So I do not think I would give just one central point unless I gave them the main points from the Discussion section. Why is it essential to refer to empirical studies when you see claims in popular media? o Empirical studies refer to the facts where popular media want to grab your attention. Popular media leans more toward the public eye and what they want to hear and see. They do not care if what they print is correct or incorrect as long as you buy what they sell. How does the concept of psychological studies in the media apply to any of the following programmatic course themes? 3-2 Discussion: Psychological Studies in the Media o The concept of psychological studies in the media applies to social justice by helping individuals focus on becoming more informed and engaged citizens; however, if the media does not give out the correct information, society is in even more trouble because of their falsehood. We as psychological professionals must step in and help our fellow man by respecting their personal beliefs and each individual as their person. We as professionals can help create a fairer and more tolerant society by giving our research and studies of empirical data. References: Crockett, M. J., Clark, L., Robbins, T. W., (2009, September).
