EDCI 413 Developmental Foundations and Programs of Early Childhood Education UL Lafayette Child Development Center Tour Purpose 1: to develop an understanding of the historical, philosophical-theoretical, research, and current knowledge base of early childhood education and early intervention 1. Write a paragraph which explains the following parts of your tour: a. History of the ULL Child Development Center The ULL Child Development Center was established in 1974 and is one of the oldest childcare centers in Louisiana. The goal of this establishment is to help student parents as they continue their education. The school recognized that there was a need for childcare centers. An 18 year old SGA president ran the center under the SGA. Student parents get priority spots and the children of faculty and staff come next if they have any available spots that need to be filled but no more than 10% of the faculty and staff children can fill up the center. The center is open 5 days a week. Mondays-Thursdays the center is open from 7:15-5:45 and on Fridays the center is open from 7:15-12:45. b. Philosophy of the ULL Child Development Center The child development center incorporates a lot of different philosophies in the classroom. The center believes that kids learn better through hands-on experiences. The centers in each classroom allows students to imitate the real world through play. For example, if you walk into a classroom, you may never see the kids lined up with flash cards, you will see them interacting and engaging with each other. c. Describe the demographic setting of the ULL Child Development Center. The center has a big range of demographics. Every kid is different. The center welcomes all kids no matter what their race, nationality, or religion is. The center holds international children, kids who live next door in family housing, kids whose families commute, and kids of different nationalities. Purpose 2: to form a conceptualization of the discipline of early childhood education; growth and development of the young child; diversity and cross-cultural perspectives of early childhood and child development; and research trends in the field; 1. a. How does the ULL Child Development Center accommodate children with the age groups that it serves? The child development center tailors to a child’s curriculum, what’s age appropriate, culturally appropriate, and socially appropriate. They adapt to each age group and their needs. For example in the 1 year old group they may have kids who aren’t walking yet. One year they had a 1 year old who was potty trained and could say when they needed to use the bathroom compared to a 4 year old who wasn’t potty trained. They believe early intervention is the best. Teachers do portfolios on every child to keep track of their growth as well as to challenge their process. They also make sure to keep account of any kids who have allergies. In the lunch area, there is a whiteboard with any child who has an allergy name and what they are allergic to. b. Describe the environment (specific for different age groups) of the ULL Child Development Center. The child development center is licensed for 12 months to 7 years old. Each class caters to the age group it holds. For years, teachers developed full scale lesson plans based on the department of education. In each classroom, it is set up center based catering to the age group that class holds. For example, a 1 year old class may have bigger toys because of smaller toys being a choke hazard or in the 4 year old class they may have more items in the art center or the kitchen area. Each class has a kitchen area, dramatic play area, art area, and block area. They follow a schedule because the children thrive on routines and consistency. In the classroom, there is a specific teacher to student ratio they must follow. In the 1 year old class, the ratio is 2 teachers to 5 students, the 2 year old classroom is 1 teacher to 10 students, 3 year old classroom is 1 teacher to 13 students but they are currently at 1 teacher to 12 students, and the pre-k classroom is 1 teacher to 15 students but it is currently at 1 teacher to 14 students. Purpose 3: to gain an understanding of developmental diversity and its implications for early education and early intervention. 1. Write a paragraph which explains the following parts of your tour: a. Describe “diversity” within the setting of the ULL Child Development Center. The child development center is very diverse in the kids as well as the staff. Every person in that building comes from a different background. There are kids who are of different races and nationalities and the same goes for the staff. The center is very encouraging to different nationalities, including the staff.
