ME 199 (FAE) Proposal Report By: Ahmed (Fele) Felemban Team: Off-Road Illini (Baja) Sub-team: Suspension Sub-team Lead: Madison Garcia My project assignment for this semester revolves around redesigning and optimizing the front upright of the car. Although the team already has a designed upright, my team’s goal is to optimize the front upright to achieve maximum efficiency in terms of its weight and strength distribution. The main goal of our project is to determine the best possible design that minimizes the front uprights weight, while maximizing efficiency in handling stress during operation. We will do this by researching stress topology optimization of the front upright as shown in the figure. Topology optimization is defined as a mathematical method which spatially optimizes the distribution of a material within a defined domain, by fluffing given constraints previously established and minimizing a predefined cost function. In our case, the cost function is weight, and the constraint we are trying to maximum is stress handling of the upright. An idea that I had for stress optimization is to simulate different stress and pressure loads on the front upright CAD’ed model. Then, using AI, determine the regions where stress is minimum and redesign the upright minus those minimum regions. Through this, we could reduce the weight of the upright while keeping is structural integrity and stress handling capabilities.
