As you read the lesson, answer the following questions in your own words. Define emotional intelligence (EI).
How is a person's EI measured?
What is the difference between EI and IQ?
As you read the lesson, answer the following questions in your own words. What can EI enable people to do?
How does high EI help global leaders?
Lesson 13: Ethics of Emotional Intelligence
As you read the lesson, answer the following questions in your own words. What is moral identity?
Define the term "machiavellianism"
Lesson 11: Definition and Principles of Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence is the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions and handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.
What are the building blocks that make up EI?
The building blocks that make up EI are self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, and relationship management.
How is self-awareness different than self-
management?
Self awareness is the ability to recognize and understand your own emotions, thoughts, and behaviors while self managent the ability to contol your own emotions, thoughts, and beliefs. The difference between self-
awarenes and self-management is being able to recognize your emotions versus being able to control your emotions. A person may be able to know the emotion they are expieriencing but doesnt always know how to regulate their emotions.
Numerous self-scoring surveys exist to help you measure your current state of EI. Being able to recognize your EI can bring you closer to improved self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills.
While IQ is a measure of cognitive abilities, EI is a measure of emotional abilities. Both are important in their own ways and can contribute to an individual’s success in different areas of life. However, it’s important to also recognize that they are not both exclusive and can complement each other to create a more in debth picture of human intelligence.
Lesson 12: Role, Benefits, and Examples of Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence enables people to build relationships, relate to others in social situations, lead, negotiate conflict, and work as part of a team.
What are the benefits of leaders having a high EI?
Leaders who exhibit high emotional intelligence in the workplace are better able to positively influence employee engagement because employees are better workers when they believe that their supervisor cares about them as a person. Also leaders who show high EI tend to be able to self-regulate which allows them to use social media in a way that connects people instead of alienating them.
Successful global leaders with high EQ demonstrate self-awareness by understanding how their own values and cultural norms compare to those of other countries. International business leaders also use self-
regulation and social skills to adapt to different cultures and interact in a culturally sensitive manner. Basically their EI helps them recognize the differences between there countries culrural norms compared to other countries cultural norms.
What four things does an ethical leader need?
Ethical leaders must have high emotional intelligence, as well as moral strength, grit, and courage to successfully and ethically lead organizations.
Moral identity is one aspect of emotional intelligence that has to do with how much people view themselves as ethical and caring people.
What role does courage play in being an ethical leader?
Courage is the willingness to face agony, pain, intimidation, or uncertainty, even when you are reluctant or fearful. Ethical leaders need to do the right thing even if they are afraid of the possible outcomes. Its important for an ethical leader to do whats right for the greater good regardless of the possible challenges they may face to get there.
What role does grit play in being an ethical leader?
Angela Duckworth defines grit as "perseverance and passion for long-term goals." She and her colleagues have concluded that grit is the biggest predictor of lifelong achievement. Her research has shown that grit has a bigger impact than IQ and twice the importance of talent. Grit also closely correlates with emotional intelligence and has the ability to manage emotions. Leaders use both emotional intelligence and grit to promote organizational growth that matches with their personal passion and vision.
Machiavellianism is when a person is cunning, scheming, and unscrupulous. Some leaders have high self-
awareness and use this to manipulate and control people and situations in the workplace. Extreme cases of low EI and high awareness can be seen in people who are master manipulators or exhibit what is known as Machiavellianism.

As you read the lesson, answer the following questions in your own words.
Define the techniques for improving EI.
Define supportive communication.
Lesson 14: Techniques for Objective Self-
Examination
Describe the five principles outlined by Sellie-Dosunmu.
Self-awareness is the ability to identify your emotions and being in tune with your emotional state. When a person is self aware they are real about their emotional state and therefore can control it better. People with self-awareness are usaully confident and aware of their strengths as well as their weeknesses. Self-
regulation is the knowing your emotional and the ability to control there emotions. They are able to adapt to most situations and see challenges as oppurtunities rather than threats. People with high self-regulation tend to be more trustworthy and dependable and are always looking for ways to improve ones self. Moitivation is the ability to understand how your emotions impact your ability to reach personal goals. With motivation comes always trying to improve and tackling certain challenges even if its difficult. People with high motivation are generally have more inititive and tend to be more persistent. Empathy is being aware of other peoples emotions and having the ability to react to them in an appropriate and understanding way. Last but not least social-skills which is having the ability to read the emotions of multiple people and being able to handle conflicts with others in an appropriate and understaing way. People with social-skills are better at collaberating with others as well as dealing with complex issues involving multiple people at the same time.
Lesson 15: Enhancing Your Emotional Intelligence
Techniques for improving EI are meditation and mindfulness, self reflection or thinking about how and why you act the way you do, and feedback because its important to know how other people percieve you.
How is meditation different than mindfulness?
Meditation is when you focus all of you energy and attention on a specific spot and by doing this you can calm the mind and body to be aware of the mental, physical, and emotional proccess that control you. Mindfullness is a state of conciousnous in which you are aware of the present moment. You can reach a mindfulness through meditation.
How is self-reflection different than mindfulness?
Self-reflection is knowing how and why we do the things we do and by doing this we can help in our quest to sef improvement. Mindfulness is being conscious and aware of the present moment. The difference between Self-reflection and mindfulness is that mindfulness is refering to now and present where Self-
reflection is thinking about how your past behaviors or emotions affect the way you are now.
Describe the three tools outlined by Sellie-
Dosunmu to guide feedback.
behavioral event interviews: These are guided interview questions where individuals use their own words to describe their thoughts and feelings during a specific situation. The coach then uses individual responses to measure specific behaviors and competencies and establish a development plan.
simulation feedback: In this type of feedback, individuals role-play in challenging EI simulations and are provided feedback based on their behavioral choices. Coaches then discuss what went well and what could be done differently based on EQ competencies. surveys: These are paper or online questionnaires that ask learners to describe their preferred actions in specific situations. More sophisticated surveys require trainers or coaches to be accredited.
