Part 1: Leadership Learning Objectives
There are many different qualities that contribute to being a great leader. Some leaders may be better at certain things than others, but all leaders possess and understand certain essential attributes that are common in all successful leadership styles. I believe I have most of the characteristics required to be a great leader and have a deep understanding of all the different qualities that come together to make a great leader, but there are definitely some aspects that I feel I need to work on and strengthen (
see Appendix I)
.
Listening
Listening is a leadership quality that I want to improve upon. Listening is essential in leadership. You need to be able to listen to your followers and understand them. It helps to build relationships amongst you and your followers and contributes to the level of trust and commitment shared between the leader and the follower. I notice my weakness in my listening skills when I am unfamiliar with the position of the follower. If it is a problem that I have never experienced and do not know much about, that is when I struggle to put myself in their shoes. This is something that I need to fix in order to be a better leader. When it is a topic that I am familiar with or a situation that I have also been in, I am a much better listener and can contribute
much more effectively with the follower. My goal is to take my ability to listen to followers’ problems that I can connect with and focus on applying that same knowledge to problems I am unfamiliar with. Communication
Communication is a core element of good leadership. I often feel that what I am trying to get across to people is not what they are interpreting. The biggest issue I think I have is that I do not always match my tone to what I am saying. This can affect the message I am trying to express as I may be sending mixed signals that my followers are not interpreting in the way I am intending. Along with my tone, I need to work on my body language. Voice is a very small part of communication and actions will always speak louder than words. The weakest part of my body language is often my facial expression as that is where I struggle to hide how I really feel. For example, when I am describing something important, I feel as though my tone almost sounds
annoyed and often my facial expression will come off as a scowl instead of just serious. Although I just want to express the importance of the subject, people may interpret me as being frustrated with them and not trusting them to do the job correctly. If my followers do not trust me
and do not think I believe in them, they will not perform well and that will affect the overall achievement of the task or goal at hand. Clarification

As a leader, it is important to listen to your followers’ inputs and opinions. They can generate new ideas and may see things that I have overlooked. Taking the time to listen to and consider followers’ ideas and inputs also shows that you respect them and value what they have to say. Sometimes their ideas and opinions may not be helpful, but it is important to take the time
to listen to them and at least give them a chance. I am always open to listening to the ideas and inputs of my followers, but I will often dismiss their ideas too quickly if they do not make sense to me immediately. I often fail to ask for clarification and a deeper explanation of what they are intending. For example, when working on group projects for school, I like to take on the leadership role, and thus try to have the final decision on what is best for the group. When we are
all generating ideas, I will always listen to what everyone has to say, but if their idea is unclear or
they are approaching something from a different angle than I normally would, I do not really take
their idea into consideration. This is something that I really need to work on as many people have
great ideas and the more input you have, the stronger your solution is likely to be. I need to start asking people to explain more and need to open myself up to interpreting ideas and information in different ways in order to become a better leader.
Values
The values that a leader holds are extremely important to the way they are seen by others.
I find that great leaders often hold very original values. Whether it is an inspirational leader like Craig Kielburger, who values the importance of the potential children have to do extraordinary things, or a negative but successful leader such as Adolf Hilter, who valued the greatness of specific types of people over others (i.e. the Nazis over the Jewish), they all have values that are original to them. The passion that leaders hold for these values is why they are able to make others believe in the same values, no matter what they may be. I want to become more passionate
about the values that I hold. For me, I value motivation and the drive that some people have to become great. I do not think that anyone can achieve greatness, I think it takes a certain type of person. The drive and ability to seek greatness is something that I really value and is a value that is individual to me. It is not a universal value. I want to work on expressing my values, such as this, to those around me. For example, when I am working with a team, I want to hold a high level of passion for success and quality performance so that my team also wants to adopt these values. I will work to truly establish and perfect my core values and make them clear to those around me through my actions and attitude towards the goals ahead. Learning from Mistakes
Learning from your mistakes is very important in life in general. Repeating the same mistakes is like tripping over your own feet; it’s avoidable by paying a little bit of attention. As a leader, I need to set an example for my followers and making the same mistakes is not the way to
do it. Everyone makes mistakes, even great leaders. Mistakes are what we learn from and make Downloaded by MM KK (kaur2shine@gmail.com)

us who we are. I enjoy making mistakes sometimes because it makes me learn how not to do something. As Thomas Edison said when inventing the light bulb, “I have not failed, I have found 1000 ways how not to do it”. I need to work on inspiring my followers to learn from their mistakes. I see so many people who just keep making the same mistake instead of learning from it the first time. For example, when I’m on a sports team, I notice fellow players making the same mistake over and over. I need to work on helping them to recognize their mistakes and correct them. Fixing the mistakes you make may take time, but making small improvements everyday gradually over time will correct the mistake. I also want to continuously remind myself
to learn from my mistakes, especially as a leader. No leader is perfect and I need to always remember to learn from the mistakes I make and not get frustrated or forget about it. Every mistake is an opportunity to improve and I need to continue to work on always utilizing this in order to become better. Part 2: Reflection on Leadership

The concession stand at the Shelby High School stadium sells slices of pizza during boys' and girls' soccer games. Concession stand
sales are a primary source of revenue for the high school athletic programs, so the athletic director wants to sell as much food as
possible; however, any pizza not sold is given away free to the players, coaches, and referees or it is thrown away. Thus, the athletic
director wants to determine a reorder point that will meet the demand for pizza. Pizza sales are normally distributed with a mean of 6
pizzas per hour and a standard deviation of 3.70 pizzas. The pizzas are ordered from Pizza Beth's restaurant, and the…
