MIST WK 8 Video Case 1. Why is the cloud important to cities like Dubuque as they pursue their visions of a smart city? The cloud is important in being cost efficient and being able to store large amounts of data in one place. Dubuque wants to transform into a “smarter city”. A “smart city” is when day-to-day processes and infrastructure of the city are able to provide a better and more efficient life for the citizens. A smart city can be accomplished when being able to store data on many different things and provide the information and statistics to the citizens. A cloud would be extra important to be able to store information quickly and efficiently while also being cost effective. It also helps with the accuracy as storing in the cloud can be better trusted then letting the government store your information or an outside data center. 2. What do Dubuque officials mean when they talk about a “smarter city?” What Dubuque officials mean by a “smarter city” is that their day-to-day processes and infrastructure of the city provide real-time data to the citizens which allows them to better allocate resources and plan for the future. A “smarter city” would allow the people to have tools to quickly and easily get data in order to make smarter choices on their energy consumption. Citizens of the city could monitor pollution concentration on the street they live on and the trash can could possibly be able to send signals when they are closer to being full. The city was able to determine the amount of water saved by decreased consumption and leak detection and information about how much electricity individual appliances are consuming. 3. List the major “smarter city” projects in Dubuque. What has been the impact of the smarter domestic water program? The major “smarter city” projects in Dubuque are smarter water, smarter electric, smarter natural gas, and smarter travel. There were solutions that were leveraged almost immediately. Smarter water helped with reducing the average water consumption and there was also an increase in leak detection. This ultimately helps preserve water while also lowering your water bill at the end of each month. By using the cloud citizens are able to effortlessly look at their usage in their own homes and adapt and save money while also limiting their footprint. The cloud is invisible so you don't know exactly how it works as a citizen but researchers and engineers are constantly making changes and updates to the cloud without you even knowing so that it is able to run efficiently and well.
4. What is Dubuque’s next move now that they have developed some successful pilot projects like the water program and electricity program? Dubuques next move now that they have developed successful pilot projects like the water and electricity program is moving the silos together from water, electric, gas, transportation and finding different interrelationships. This would create a unified smart system that analyzes the relationships in each of the silos. This would help with specifically identifying the problems and the different weaknesses in the utilization of certain resources in different specific areas. Certain things can be working well in one neighborhood but those same resources might not be doing very well in a different area which is where researchers can look and try and help adjust. By doing this citizens can experience an easier way of looking at their cloud data and also making sure they are staying at the most efficient level. 5. How is the approach taken in Portland similar or different to the approach taken in Dubuque? The approach that is taken in Portland is more for helping decision makers when planning and helping them understand the different implications on the city that each different decision they have would make. They are using it to help make better decisions and it seems like only government officials and decision makers are using the data. While in Dubuque the effort is more building a big data platform from different cities and citizens systems in order to analyze the data and find the different areas of waste looking at the interrelationship among the systems like water, gas, and electricity. In Dubuque the citizens have access to their cloud data and look at it to help them reduce their footprint in their own home by seeing exactly how much they are using.
