Process and product layouts are combined in Amazon's hybrid facility model. Amazon
uses a product layout to help in facility selection and packaging. This facility is set up to oversee
certain goods quickly and effectively. Process layouts may be seen in many parts of Amazon's
fulfillment centers, particularly in areas where goods differ. For example, product size and kind
are used to organize the packing and separate divisions instead of the production line. Amazon
uses this hybrid method, which combines flexibility and knowledge, to oversee its diverse
product range successfully (Ortner, 2022).
Production techniques that can readily adjust to variations in the kind and volume of the
product being produced are known as flexible manufacturing systems, or FMSs. Computerized
systems and machines may be set up to manage varying production volumes and produce a wide
range of items. A flexible manufacturing system (FMS) can easily adjust to changes in the kind
and volume of products produced because of its upfront design. Most of the production in an
FMS is automated, which lowers labor expenses overall. However, the design and
implementation of an FMS system are more costly than those of a fixed system, and they call for
specialized specialists. Given that human error is inevitable and that people make errors, Amazon
must eliminate as many human errors as possible to increase efficiency. Items are scanned and
rejected by people. Their binning procedure includes a purely random step. The approach made
no sense whatsoever. It is easy for someone to scan an item incorrectly or misunderstand a label.
The entire procedure is then backed up. They may automate the procedure to get rid of those
mistakes (Russell & Taylor,2023).
