Book Review HIST 105 Professor John T. Lowe April 7th, 2023 The book, The Diary of a Young Girl, by Anne Frank was originally published in 1947. The Random House-published 2015 edition is a modified edition of the initial diary that contains un-seen content. The diary starts when Anne is thirteen years old in 1942 and ends dramatically when the family is found and taken to detention camps in 1944. Only a few weeks before Bergen-Belsen was liberated, Anne Frank died there at the age of 15. The book is a potent and moving description of life throughout the war while living in disguise. In her writing, Anne is open and honest about the challenges of sharing a small space with her relatives, as well as about her feelings of being alone and isolated. “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl” commences chapter 1 with a description of Anne's family and their choice to seek refuge in Amsterdam during World War Two. On her 13th birthday, June 12, 1942, Anne Frank received a little red journal from her parents. Consequently, on July 6, 1942, her family was compelled to go into hiding. Despite the fact that they could only bring a few items with them, Anne carried her book along with her to the new place, which she named the "Secret Annex." Anne kept a journal of her views and emotions while living in the Annex for two years. She writes about her lifestyle in secret with 7 other people—her parents, sister, the van Pels family, and Fritz Pfeffer—in addition to the war and her goals for the coming years.
Sageera 2 Chapter 2 begins with Anne choosing to revise her journal upon hearing a radio program from the Dutch government in hiding urging people to preserve their war journals for publishing after the war. Anne begins documenting her views, emotions, and day-to-day living in hiding at the age of thirteen years old. She discusses the challenges of residing in such a tiny place and also how they must remain exceptionally quiet throughout the day to avoid being noticed by the staff in the building beneath. Chapter 3 reveals that on August 4, 1944, the Nazis invaded the Secret Annex, and detained the people. The whole contents of Anne's diary, along with the journals, loose paper scraps, and the plaid diary, were still in the Annex. Sadly, Anne Frank died in the Holocaust. Being the lone sufferer of the people sheltered in the Hidden Annex, her father, Otto Frank, eventually made his way back to Amsterdam post-war. Miep Gies, a lady who endangered her life to protect the Franks, handed him Anne's journal, which she had kept secret for over a year after he discovered that Anne died in a concentration camp. He was filled with tears as he read the journals, especially his daughter's depiction of living in the Annex and her sentiments toward her family. In chapter 4, Anne finds it hard to comprehend the discrimination and persecution of Jews. Anne constantly struggles with who she is. While she believes herself to be German, her German nationality has been terminated, and regardless of the fact that she resides in Holland, many Dutch people now oppose Jews. Despite her strong sense of sympathy for her oppressed people, Anne wanted to be recognized as an independent instead of being part of a victimized group. Anne struggled with captivity, hardship, and the complex and challenging concerns of having to grow up under the horrific conditions of the Holocaust over the two years documented in her journal.
Sageera 3 In May 1944, once Mr. van Hoeven, who assisted in delivering vegetables to the survivors, was detained for sheltering 2 Jews in his house, the Annex experienced an enormous loss. Anne mourned the condition of society and wondered about the justification for fighting. She disliked the fact that while individuals driven by prejudice were allowed to wander around and victimize others, good people were getting imprisoned for their efforts to help others. As their time in isolation dragged on without a clear ending in sight, she felt helpless and oppressed. Even on happier days, Anne was always stressed out and depressed due to her solitude and her dread of being found. Furthermore, Anne's opinions regarding the annex are conflicting. The majority of the time, Anne is aware of how lucky she and her family are to be able to use the annex as a refuge. She respects the compassion and charity of the non-Jewish coworkers of her father who put themselves in danger to bring her family necessities such as food. Yet Anne frequently condemns the annex's poor mental and physical circumstances, and she finds the isolation upsetting. Anne believes that the Jews as a whole are not lucky and have only been selected for negative things. She admits that she's divided between feeling privileged and miserable about her present circumstances. She thinks that an early death might have seemed preferable to a limited, tiring, and frightening life. But still, Anne rapidly realizes that she enjoys life excessively and feels lucky to have had the chance to escape from the Germans. "Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl" is a worthwhile read in addition to being a significant historical artifact. Anne’s literature is both straightforward and deep, and her understanding of human nature is both insightful and tragic. Anne's journal offers an intimate

Sageera 4 description of life while hidden in the Holocaust. In addition to discussing the difficulties of sharing a small space with her family and perhaps other refugees, she also discusses her future goals, worries, and aspirations. She writes with strong compassion, comprehension, and thoughtfulness. The book is fully composed in the first person, which enables the audience to empathize strongly with Anne's feelings and events. She describes the difficulties of living in an attic in Amsterdam with her loved ones and others when the city was under Nazi control. A potent monument to the human spirit in the face of incomprehensible adversity is created by Anne's honest and unfiltered writing of her emotions, feelings, and hopes. The character of Anne changes as the reader flips each page, from a young girl who is naive and unaware of her surroundings to a teenager who is wise and mature. Anne Frank’s book is a representation of optimism and persistence, empowering generations to speak up against prejudice and oppression. It's even more remarkable considering this book was composed by a 13-year-old hidden from the Nazis. In her journal, Anne vividly describes the difficulties of cohabiting with others and frequently having insufficient food and room. She continued striving for beauty and purpose in tiny things, like reading novels or enjoying the natural world, regardless of their frightful situation. In her work, Anne demonstrates a keen eye for detail that allows her to ruminate on complicated human feelings with exceptional clarity. This diary has been a constant favorite for generations, mainly because of the author's views on individuality, passion, belief, and compassion, which are far more mature than her age. Additionally, Anne is a symbol of diversity since she embraces a variety of personalities
Sageera 5 at one- a little Jewish girl growing up all through World War II who experienced typical teenage hardships, such as attempting to balance contradicting desires for freedom and reliance on others while discovering novel social relations. This book is among the most remarkable diaries ever published about love and self-discovery because it demonstrates how one individual is able to succeed in the face of overwhelming tragedy. It also encourages readers with its anecdotes and the author's remarkable ability, which is evident on every page. A potent monument to the human spirit in the face of incomprehensible adversity is created by Anne's honest and unfiltered writing of her emotions, feelings, and hopes. At first, when I began reading this book, I was a bit skeptical and had stereotypes about reading a non-fiction book since my preferred genre differed from this one because I like reading fictional books. The struggle, feelings, and thoughts that many victims, like Anne and her family, went through are accurately described in this book, which has sparked my curiosity in reading more historical memoirs like this one. I kept wanting to turn the pages to find out what would happen next when I did so. Anne's writing is clear and evocative, and it makes me want to put myself in her position and see the world from her point of view. In conclusion, "The Diary of Anne Frank" gives a distinctive and significant viewpoint on one of the saddest eras in human civilization. It is a wonderfully written and compelling work. It serves as evidence of the resiliency and power of the human spirit and serves as a reminder of the value of optimism, even in the most difficult circumstances. Therefore, I would certainly recommend this book to others.
