Chapter 11 Activity
Write a response of at least 200 words to the following prompt:
Research indicates that teachers typically have a high sense of efficacy as they
work through their teacher training programs, but that their self-efficacy for
teaching decreases during the first couple of years in the classroom before
climbing back up. Why is that? Given what you now know about the sources of
self-efficacy (mastery, vicarious experiences, social persuasion,
physiological/affective states), what can you do now to better prepare yourself for
the classroom experience?
During their classes and internship programs, teachers often start with a strong
sense of self-efficacy, which arises from the controlled learning environment and the
theoretical knowledge they gain. However, when they step into a real classroom with all
its unpredictability, this confidence can take a hit. The transition often results in a
decrease in self-efficacy as new teachers need help managing the classroom, meeting
diverse student needs, and fulfilling curriculum demands. They may also miss the
immediate support and feedback they had during their internships, classwork, and
student teaching.
As teachers accumulate more experience, their self-efficacy typically rebounds.
This resurgence is a result of gaining mastery through their experiences, which is the
most potent source of self-efficacy (Andrew, 2022). Over time, teachers build up a set of
effective instructional techniques, become skilled at handling various classroom
scenarios, and eyewitness positive learning outcomes in their students.
In the effort to enhance preparation for the classroom experience, a teacher
could seek out vicarious experiences and gain support from others. This entails
watching veteran educators in action and getting helpful criticism, both of which can
significantly increase confidence. A positive physical and emotional state is also

essential, and this may be achieved through self-care, stress management exercises,
and upholding a work-life balance. Self-efficacy is a dynamic concept that must be kept
in mind. It can be developed and strengthened over time with consistent work,
introspection, and a commitment to continuous learning and development. Even though
there may be difficulties along the way, it is all worthwhile when you see students’
progress and development.
