CNL-505 Counseling Disposition Reflection Worksheet Directions: Refer to the GCU Counselor Dispositions or the GCU Professional Dispositions of Learners. Consider your development regarding the dispositions related to your field of study and the ways you incorporated them into the counseling relationship. Select three dispositions you consider to be a strength. Complete the chart by listing the dispositions you consider to be your strengths as well as describe how the dispositions are considered strengths for you. Each description response should be 75-100 words in length. Please note you do not need to be actively practicing to complete this worksheet. You can respond in the first person: however, please make sure you cite and reference the counseling dispositional expectations as required. Disposition Description of how the disposition is a strength 1. High Expectations In reviewing the professional dispositions of learners one of the dispositions I find to be one of my strengths is high expectations. I believe that all K-12 students can be academically successful and can achieve personal success as well (GCU, 2022). Educators need to believe that all students can learn and should support realistic expectations in their academic success (GCU, 2023). High expectations can be demonstrated with behaviors such as identifying strengths and weaknesses, individualize instruction, knowing your students, communicating, and including students in goal planning (GCU, 2023). 2. Respect for the Diversity of Others Another disposition that I believe is a strength of mine is being sensitive to the social needs of a student and being aware of the cultural component. The disposition states that educators should be sensitive to social needs and embrace cultural diversity in the community. They should also demonstrate respect for others in their respective communities (GCU, 2023). Some examples that I believe are key within this disposition are the practice of inviting and embracing diversity. Diversity should also be celebrated, and the culture of students should be acknowledged
(GCU, 2023). 3. Compassion The compassion disposition shares that school counselors should demonstrate positive regard and honesty in their relationships with stakeholders around the areas of academics, social/emotional, and career support (GCU, 2022). I believe that my biggest strength is my ability to create and nurture relationships with others while ensuring that I am providing support. Some of the ways one can demonstrate this behavior and that I strive to do daily are the following way. One can happily greet students daily, show genuine interest, have honest conversations, and build relationships outside of the academic mindset (GCU, 2023). During my first year as a counselor, I believe I thrived in this area. During my time as a Child Protection Services Social Worker, I was tasked with building relationships on a daily basis with children. I have translated those skills over to my current work. Directions: Now that you have identified dispositions you consider a strength, review the disposition document again and consider any dispositions for areas of growth. Complete the chart below by adding two dispositions for areas of growth as well as a preliminary plan regarding your plan to develop your counselor identity. Each description response should be 75- 100 words in length. You can respond in the first person: however, please make sure you cite and reference the counseling dispositional expectations as required. Disposition Description of how you plan to develop 1. Reflection The reflection disposition is one that I believe is an area for growth for me. The reflection disposition states that one must utilize self- awareness and receive constructive criticism as it crucial for professional growth (GCU, 2022). As a current counselor I believe it can be difficult at times to slow down and take the time needed to self-assess. I believe I need to
be more intentional about setting time aside to reflect. A School Counselor should also engage in ongoing assessment of practice and must participate in professional development that includes collaboration and supervision (GCU, 2022). The high school where I currently work at is the largest in the state so at times it is easy to prioritize students over training opportunities. 2. Advocacy The other disposition I believe I can improve on is advocacy. The disposition states that school counselors should promote access and equity for all students (GCU, 2022). School counselors should understand that their community involvement has an impact on social justice for all involved (GCU, 2022). As a school counselor it is easy to work on an individual and group level, but I find it difficult to engage in more systemic school issues. However, during the last year I have joined the AVID site team and I have been joined a couple committees that impact daily school activities. Directions: Now that you have identified strengths and areas of growth, review the specific dispositions listed below depending on your program of study. Describe how you plan to develop your Professional Identity or High Expectations and Dedication dispositions. Clinical Mental Health Counseling students will review the Professional Identity dispositions from the GCU Counselor Dispositions. School Counseling students will review the High Expectations and Dedication dispositions in the Professional Dispositions of Learners documents located in the Class Resources. Please respond within 75-100 words. You can respond in the first person; however, please make sure you cite and reference as needed. Short Answer Response: The High Expectation value is one that I listed as my strengths. The high expectation disposition states that a school counselor should believe that all students can achieve personal and academic success while maintaining realistic expectations (GCU, 2022). As an active school counselor, I practice this disposition daily. I work to connect with as many students as possible day after day to not only speak to them about academics but to build positive relationships. I plan to continue to build on this disposition as I need to be conscious that every student’s path is unique, and I must embrace such. The Dedication disposition speaks about a school counselors’ commitment to education and the profession while embracing lifelong learning in the role (GCU, 2022). Although, I am already working as a school counselor I have decided to complete my masters in

school counseling to better serve my students in this role. I will continue to be open to building a comprehensive counseling program that is effective for all students. In my short time as a counselor, I have learned to love the profession and I plan to remain in this role the rest of my career. References Grand Canyon University (2023).
