News-Medical, & Moore, S. M. (2023, November 6). Ethical Considerations in AI-Driven Healthcare
. News Medical. Retrieved February 5, 2024, from https://www.news-
medical.net/health/Ethical-Considerations-in-AI-Driven-Healthcare.aspx Unit 2 IRLA The news article “Ethical Considerations in AI-Driven Healthcare” by Sarah Moore highlights the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into healthcare and how it has revolutionized how we diagnose, treat, and manage diseases. This specifically relates to values and ethics because as AI becomes more present in healthcare, ethical questions relating to data and privacy, algorithm bias, patient autonomy and consent, and the adaptability of healthcare professionals arise. The article discusses the collection and management of patient data which relates to the value of privacy and confidentiality. To ensure that the patients are not susceptible to data breaches and unauthorized access, confidentiality and security must be guaranteed when using AI to handle their information. This takes into account the errors that can come with storing and sharing patient data collected by AI. Patients must also be informed about how their data will be utilized by AI and if they consent to it. Not all patients will know the implications of sharing their data with AI and they should be able to opt out because that is their right of privacy. Along with values of privacy and confidentiality, the article also discusses the ethics of integrating AI into healthcare. Healthcare professionals must ensure that the decisions they make with AI align with the best interests of the patient. They must also help patients understand how the AI is being used and how it influences their care, demonstrating complete transparency about AI in healthcare. This relates to the ethic of care framework because it values the collaboration, relationships, and context when it comes to ethical decision making. It observes the specific
context when it comes to decision making which is whether a patient understands and consents to the use of AI technology to handle their personal data. Based on this, the healthcare professionals must consider the needs of each patient
’
s interest and work collaboratively to develop the best solution to maintain the relationship between everyone. I believe that integrating AI into healthcare can provide many benefits but also harbor implications. Having AI technology in healthcare can help us innovate the healthcare sector and improve diagnostics, decision making, and personalized treatment. But it also raises concerns such as privacy, confidentiality, and ethics. I admire that an ethic of care framework can be used to help compromise these implications and establish a balance. Being able to bend some of the rules could help patients and healthcare professionals come to a middle ground and make the best decision for both parties. Instead of decontextualizing a situation, it is important to prioritize what is happening currently and provide exceptions that work the best for everyone and maintain a strong relationship.
