Overeating and obesity Essay
Why do Americans overeat to the point of becoming obese and what are the effects on the body? As
the world looks at society today, clearly Americans have an issue with being overweight and
becoming obese especially compared with other countries. "Approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of
children and adolescents aged 2–19 years are obese," and "more than one–third of U.S. adults
(35.7%) are obese" (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, 2013, Data and Statistics). History
suggests that overeating is a choice, an addition similar to smoking cigarettes caused by lack of will
power, boredom or simple gluttony. With new research, society is beginning to learn there is more
behind obesity than just a choice or addition. For instance, a

Obesity can lead to diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, even some
cancers and potentially death. These are all very serious medical issues that need to be addressed.
The psychological change would be effects on self–esteem, depression and even face professional
and social discrimination. Overweight people may not be hired just based on their weight. If an
employer has another candidate for the position that isn't overweight, that person is more likely to be
chosen over an obese person. Obese people can meet the requirements, but due to weight, the
individual may not be chosen because the potential employer may think if they can't control their
eating, then they can't control other behaviors. Society may judge an obese person as messy or not
organized but anyone could be messy and disorganized. There are many stereotypes of obese
individuals which is part of why depression is common among obese people. Depression is much
more than just sadness. A depressed individual may feel tired, worthless, hopeless, and unimportant.
Obese people may suffer from insomnia or excessive sleep, and can have recurrent thoughts of
suicide or death. Depression greatly affects the individual's self–esteem and stress levels.
Fortunately depression is treatable with antidepressants and therapy. Children may have bullies at
school, or even at home, that pick on

Fast Food Cause Obesity Essay
Fast Food Cause Obesity
There has been a rise in obesity in this country for the last forty years. Many scientists and doctors
have begun to question whether there is any relationship between fast food and obesity. According
to the available information the number of fast food restaurants has doubled since 1970s. (Currie, J
et al 2009).Currie J et al (2009) observe that the rise in the obesity cases in the last one decade has
been directly related to the rise in the number of people choosing fast food as their main menu. Fast
food has been described as food which is prepared in hurry for people who have little time during
meal times. These foods are very popular with the students and working people since they do not
have enough time to

The study found out that the rate of overweight and obesity among these children was five percent
higher among those whose schools were near fast food outlets compared to those students who were
attending schools in areas which were father away from the outlets which sell this type of food
(Rabin, R 2009)
Research has found that those families which choose the fast food as their main meal for more than
three times in one week are at a very high risk of developing obesity. In medical terms obesity has
been described as a public health concern which is putting many people at risk of developing
complications which may lead to early death. A person who has a body mass index of more than
thirty is described as obese while those who are above twenty five but less that thirty are classified
as overweight. In America two adults in every three is classified as overweight whereas one third of
the people are described as obese. These are high figures given the fact that obesity leads to serious
health problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
The fast foods are rich in energy giving foods making them higher culprit for weight gain among
those who consume this type of food. They are added excess sugars and fats to make them enticing
to the consumers, these two nutrients have higher rate of calories compared to other type of food.
The fact that they are sweetened and enticed with sugar and fats makes the consumer to eat in large
quantities to stratify

The Causes of Obesity Essay
America has become a society obsessed with appearance, especially weight.
We are conditioned at a young age to believe the only way to be normal is to be thin. This norm is
projected to millions of Americans each day through television, magazines, billboards and every
other form of media and advertising.
How are people to know acceptance and happiness with themselves and others when our culture
propagates what the perfect body should be.
It is the search for the elusive, perfect body that has created a thirty– three billion dollars a year
weight loss industry. Yet few reduce their body fat and even fewer maintain their weight loss beyond
two to three years. This leads to yo–yo dieting and increased low self–esteem of people

However, leptin is still very much in early experimental stages, because even though it may gauge
how much fat you have it does not at this point tell how much you want.
Another recent breakthrough was the discovery of unocortin. Unocortin appears to suppress appetite
when the body is under severe stress. It is a cousin of the brain chemical that generates the body's
"fight or flight" response. Unocortin was discovered at the Salk Institute, when a researcher was
studying a neuropeptide which activates body stress reactors. He noticed receptors in parts of the
brain where the chemical did not exist. However, it may be a long time before unocortin is actually a
consumer drug. At this time, the only way unocortin works is to be directly injected into the brain. A
company called Neurocin Biosciences, is already researching the brain receptor unocortin locks onto
to work.
For now, the serotonin reuptake inhibitor drugs are the only diet drugs being used in the U.S. These
drugs work by affecting eating behavior. Eating behavior is the result of a mixture of
neurotransmitters. The link between serotonin and eating disorders was discovered in the early
1980's. The serotonin inhibitors include Lovan, Redux and phen–fen (Phentermine and
Fenfluramine). Phen–fen is the drug combination currently recieving so much attention.
Phentermine is similar to an amphetamine and it works to increase metabolic rate.

Another reason why our children are gaining weight at a record pace is from lack of exercise. In this
day in age, with the many advancements of video gaming systems, computer games, portable DVD
players and handheld games, it's more easier for a child to watch a DVD or play a game rather than
play outside. Unfortunately, most children our choosing to play their video game
, aside from playing
hide and seek outside. Who could blame them? If you had something fun to do that did not require
you to move, many people would do that, because it's convenient. Conveniences are taking over our
society! Moreover, because of this, we as parents have to step up and say enough is enough.
How we can help our children?
The first way we can help our children is by reducing the amount of time spent in front of the
television, video game or computer. Allow your child to explore the outside more often without the
need of taking their hand–held game with them. If you live in a poverty–stricken area or an area that
you would not want to send your child outside to play in, which is very common in this day and age.
You; the parent need to arrange time to take them to the park. Give your child a chance to run
around in the sun or play in the sprinklers on a hot summer day.
In addition, we as parent can also change the simplest things that our
