1 Letter Assignment English Department, Eastern Gateway Community College ENG 102: English Composition 2 Professor Kristi Howard September 18, 2022
2 123 45 th Ave Anywhere, ZZ 12345-6789 September 18, 2022 Governor Jay Inslee Office of the Governor PO Box 40002 Olympia, WA 98504-0002 Dear Mr. Inslee: I am writing to you today as a concerned citizen of the great state of Washington. I have noticed over the last twenty or so years that the debate over the minimum wage has come up several times. I am very proud to live in the state with the third highest minimum wages in the nation and that is due in no small part to your excellent leadership over the last nine years. However, I think we can do better. I would like Washington to think outside the box and find a new and longer-term solution to this recurring problem. I think the minimum wage should be tied to the cost of living and be automatically updated yearly to reflect inflation increases. Allow me to explain further.
3 Washington state has raised the minimum wage thirty-four time since its introduction in 1961. It is not a surprise that it will have to be raised again, and again. Yet we act as if we have solved the problem when we know it will need to be changed again. This is like me making dinner for my family Monday night and being surprised when I need to do it again Tuesday night. A much better approach to this issue would be to make it an automatic adjustment. Of course, this whole plan would need to be voted into law. We are not trying to circumvent the democratic process. We simply aim to streamline the routine and predictable event of raising the minimum wage. Here is my suggestion for how this would work. Make a formula for the “official cost of living”. Base this formula on calculable factors such as the median housing, food, and utilities cost etc. I will not attempt to make this calculation for you. There are many economists who would do a much better job than I could. Once this formula is finalized and agreed upon it should be a normal function of the Department of Labor and Industries to run the calculation annually. If the “official cost of living” has risen a predetermined significant amount, then the minimum wage should be automatically adjusted. No campaigns, no debates, no vote needed. It is my hope that this adjustment to the way we approach the issue of minimum wage will free us from the political cycle we find ourselves in. Freeing us up to focus on more important issues to the long-term health and welfare of our state, country, and world. Based on your 2020 presidential campaign you recognize the urgency of the climate change crisis. Minimum wage is an important issue that needs to be taken seriously, however we have allowed ourselves to use this and other issues to distract ourselves from the looming global disaster. Automating the rise of minimum wage would allow us to put the issue on the back burner in a sense so we can focus on the larger problem. I thank you for considering this suggestion. Sincerely,
