GEO101: Global Forces, Local Diversity Assignment: Hydraulic Fracking in Ohio Introduction Industry and other human activities depend on low-cost energy and natural resources. As demand increases for a resource and prices rise, the exploitation of an unconventional resource can become profitable. Despite the profitability, these activities have resulted in the depletion and pollution of some of Earth’s scarce resources. Is hydraulic fracking a solution to Ohio? Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this assignment, you will have demonstrated the ability to Describe the distribution of fossil fuel production and reserves Evaluate possible future options for fossil fuels Identify alternative sources of energy and challenges to using them Analyze benefit and cost of exploiting unconventional fossil fuel Instruction Hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, is a method of fossil fuel extraction by injecting fluid into subterranean rock formations at high pressure to free up oil or natural gas reserves. According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), more than 80,000 Ohio wells have been stimulated by hydraulic fracturing since 1952. While fracking offers economic benefits, the costs associated with the increased drilling has been recognized. 1. Watch the video Shale gas: an energy resource for the future? - an animation of hydraulic fracturing – to understand how fracking works. 2. Watch the video Fracking Hell: The Untold Story to understand some concerns raised by fracking. 3. Identify other two or three sources (e.g., news articles, academic journal paper, and government reports) that discuss the benefits and costs of fracking, particularly in Ohio. Based on what you have learned about fracking, choose your position in a debate over whether Ohio should tighten permits around hydraulic fracturing or not. Write a five-paragraph argumentative essay “Is hydraulic fracturing a solution to Ohio?” to support your position. A five-paragraph argumentative essay consists of an introductory paragraph, three evidentiary body paragraphs that may include discussion of opposing views, and a conclusion.
