1 UTILIZING KRASNERS THEORY Utilizing Krasner’s theory Samantha Allen Teachers College, Western Governors University LPA1: language acquisition theory Instructor: Carmen Turner August 15, 2023
2 UTILIZING KRASNERS THEORY Utilizing Krasner’s theory By utilizing Krasner’s theory of secondary language acquisition in my classroom setting, I can facilitate a student's goal of Learning the English language more thoroughly by being more of an observer instead of giving them the answer but only intervening by correcting significant errors. Being the observer makes it simpler for the student to feel more secure speaking the new language. The purpose of Krasner's second language acquisition theory states that there are “effective variables" when a student is learning a second language. This can come in the form of minimizing specific grammar or overemphasizing the need for correct grammar to focus on a message and emphasizing the acquisition over the learning to speak the new language. Beginner students' activity description An activity that would work well is ESL I Spy. This way, when you use the word, the student will be able to have a visual to connect to the word you are using. This will also allow for introducing new items or new vocabulary words to be acquired fun and easygoing as I spy a simple game of connecting visual visuals to terms. Secondary students' activity description A secondary activity that would work well is Pictionary. In this game, the student can again have a visual that would allow them to connect the vocabulary word OR the object's name to an image of the object and image, and they will retain the information. Advanced students' activity description For an advanced ESL student activity, Class debate. Class debate allows advanced ESL students to showcase and utilize all the information or knowledge they have gained and practice and perfect their skills. Translanguaging
3 UTILIZING KRASNERS THEORY Translanguaging is important because ESL students can think in multiple languages. This means the student when reading in both English and their native language. While doing this, the student can connect the new language to the native language. Translanguaging allows the student to further their understanding of the new academic language. One way to facilitate translanguaging is to offer bilingual text, as this can tie the two languages, native and new, the student is learning and allows for a bridge to be built. Communicative Language The purpose of teaching communicative language is that the students may get through a conversation with their peers. One activity is the Joint Action Routine “JAR,” which is used to teach students to speak in a sequence that is logical and follows sequences of events. This strategy encourages students to communicate with routine and build self-esteem and comfort using their new language.
