Critical Thinking Assessment Template Read first: Please complete each of the 3 scenarios in this template to the best of your ability. As a reminder, by completing this assessment, you are demonstrating how you met a COMM104 course outcome:
Utilize critical thinking skills to solve personal, academic, and workplace problems.
#1 Personal Problem Scenario: Read:
Don has recently switched to a night shift to accommodate his online classes during the day, which has led to conflicting schedules with his close friend. They used to carpool to work and had similar schedules, allowing for regular communication. Now, Don’s friend calls and texts at inconvenient times, expecting immediate responses, causing frustration for both Don & the friend. How can Don and his friend effectively address their communication issues and maintain their friendship given their conflicting schedules and differing expectations?
From the skill box below,
which critical thinking skill do you feel will help Don create an effective solution to the problem?
Analyze with a Journalistic Approach
Creative Problem-Solving Model (CPS Model)
Apply a Credible Resource
(ex: Virtual Library)
The critical thinking skill I recommend Don use is:

: Creative Problem-Solving Model (CPS Model)
Which solution aligns with the critical thinking skill you just recommended? A.
Set up a time to meet on Microsoft Teams and use “share screen” so they can share schedule details to help answer questions they may have like “why don’t you text back” and “when are you available”. B.
Research managing time as a college student & effective communication strategy, then use that info to be more respectful & understanding of each other’s schedules.
C.
Work on communication issues by limiting frustrating notifications (muting phones/quiet hour settings) & agreeing to reply within 24 hours. Work on maintaining the friendship by planning a fun hang out once a month that works for both friends.

Write your response (A, B, or C) here: A
Explanation Space:
Write an explanation that demonstrates how the skill can be used to solve the problem. Responses should be your own words, based on what you learned from the lecture, and should be at least 150 words long.
Write your response here:
For Don to Clarify the problem he should start by discussing the conflicting schedules and differing expectations that are causing the frustration. I want to make sure that both of us understand the specific issues and how they are
affecting our friendship.
We should then generate ideas, like brainstorming potential solutions that can accommodate our schedules and communication needs. We should encourage each other to be open-minded and non-judgmental when sharing our ideas. Some workable
solutions I would include:
-
Setting specific times during the day when we can both communicate, even if it’s for a short duration.
-
Exploring alternative communication methods like texting, email, or
voice messages when we cannot provide immediate responses. -
Considering occasional meetups or carpooling on days when our schedules align.
Next, evaluate and select. After we brainstorm potential solutions, we should
then assess the feasibility and effectiveness of those solutions. By discussing
the pros and cons of each option, we can then consider how well they address our communication issues while maintaining our friendship.
Next, we should choose the solution that seems most suitable for both of us and give it a try. We should be flexible and willing to adjust as needed. Remember that finding a balance may require compromise from both sides. After implementing the solution, we should both regularly check in with each other to see if it’s working. Always discuss any challenges or improvements that can be made. Be open to refining the solution or trying innovative approaches when necessary.
Last, we should reflect on the experience and what we have learned about each other’s needs and expectations. Use this knowledge to strengthen your friendship and prevent similar issues from arising in the future.

Remember, effective communication is key in any relationship. Be patient, understanding, and willing to adapt to each other’s circumstances.
#2 Academic Problem Scenario: Glenda is faced with a problem. She has a 6-paragraph essay due in 5 days. She has plenty of time to finish the essay, but she feels anxious about failing because the topic she is writing about is new to her. Plagiarizing crosses her mind. With a few quick clicks, her paper could be done, but at what cost to her professional reputation, ethical character, and academic standing? In a world where success is valued in the workplace & classroom, she is forced to think about her options.
From the skill box below,
which critical thinking skill do you feel will help Glenda create an effective solution to the problem?

Which solution aligns with the critical thinking skill you just recommended? A.
Reach out to the instructor through email and ask questions about the essay and topic to get a better understanding.
B.
Ask a study buddy from class, or the Brainy Bunch group, to proofread her rough draft.
C.
Instead of plagiarizing, head to the Virtual Library to learn more about the essay topic & begin writing an original essay, knowing that the Ask a Librarian, Quick Links, & Brainfuse are also available in the Virtual Library, too.

To effectively overcome her current predicament, she should utilize the critical thinking skill of analyzing with a journalistic approach. This approach involves gathering information, evaluating different perspectives, and considering the consequences of certain actions while maintaining her integrity.
First, Glenda should start by analyzing the topic she is writing about. By conducting thorough research and gathering information from credible resources, she can gain a better understanding of the subject matter. This will enable her to develop a comprehensive and well-informed essay. Glenda can ensure that her arguments are supported by evidence and that her essay is based on accurate information. Furthermore, Glenda can enhance her critical thinking skills by evaluating different perspectives on the topic. By considering various viewpoints, she can strengthen her arguments and present a balanced view in her essay. This will highlight her ability to analyze complex issues and demonstrate her critical thinking skills. By incorporating multiple perspectives, Glenda can provide a more nuanced and well-rounded analysis of the topic.
In addition to analyzing the topic and evaluating different perspectives, Glenda should also consider the consequences of plagiarizing. Plagiarism not
only undermines her academic integrity but also has severe consequences for her professional reputation and ethical character. By analyzing the potential negative outcomes, Glenda can make an informed decision to avoid
plagiarism and maintain her integrity. This critical analysis will help her understand the importance of originality and the value of her own ideas. #

CREATIVE PROBLEM. SOLVING MODEL (CPS Model) Which solution aligns with the critical thinking skill you just recommended? A.
Make a list of what you know about the task, and then generate a list of questions you feel will help you learn more about the task. Then, take5 the list of questions to your training supervisor so they can connect you with the right people & resources for training
.
B.
Gather all your co-workers, ask them to train you on the task, and treat
them to pizza as a way to say thank you.
C.
Go to YouTube to research the task & learn about it on your own. Finish
a couple of days early so you can ask your coworkers to check your work & make adjustments as needed.

In the Creative Problem Solving (CPS Model), there are four stages – clarifying the problem, generating ideas, evaluating, and selecting solutions, and implementing the chosen solution. By following the CPS Model’s four stages
, Kendyll can harness her team’s collective knowledge and expertise to overcome her current task. First, Kyndell needs to clarify the problem, or clearly define the task at hand. She could do this by engaging in open communication with her team and gaining a comprehensive understanding of the project’s requirements, objectives, and constraints. Kyndell should seek clarification to ensure that everyone is on the same page and has a mutual understanding of the task. Next, she should generate ideas. Once the problem is clarified, Kyndell should encourage her team to brainstorm potential solutions. She needs to make sure she facilitates an environment that makes her team feel as though they can freely share their thoughts and ideas. By organizing brainstorming sessions with her team, she can gather their input. Using the

team’s perspectives and expertise, she would then be able to generate a wide range of creative solutions. Finally, after generating a pool of potential solutions, Kyndell and her team should evaluate each option based on feasibility, effectiveness, and alignment with the project’s objectives. This requires her to use critical thinking and analysis to identify the most suitable solution. She should also involve her team in the evaluation process. She could create discussions and
debates which would involve her team in the decision-making process as well. Once Kendyll and her team have selected a viable solution, Kyndell should create an action plan outlining the necessary steps, responsibilities, and deadlines. Effective delegation of tasks is crucial to ensure efficient execution. Regular communication and progress tracking will help Kyndell and her team stay on track and meet her deadline.
