Revisit details from Mr. Burt’s lesson that are noted on pages 52-54 (Kindle Location: 1175-1227). Respond to the questions below.
1.
What complex skill does Mr. Burt want his students to achieve?
According to page 52 of Who’s Engaged
, Mr. Burt wants his students to
be able to compare two interviews.
2.
How does Mr. Burt’s organization of the learning targets assist
students in achieving this complex skill? Compare the targets to Bloom's Taxonomy, and consider how the teacher structured
these targets.
Mr. Burt’s organization of the learning targets mirrors Bloom’s taxonomy.
o
Recall the major points of the two stories presented by the reporters. This target represents knowledge, which is recalling data or information.
o
Restate information in the students’ own language. This target represents comprehension, which checks for understanding of the problem.
o
Explain the significance of the two points of view. This target represents analysis, which strives to break apart ideas or concepts to find deeper meaning.
o
Sketch a diagram associating similar points. This target represents synthesis, which wants to construct a new idea from the smaller concepts.
o
Compare the two interviews. This target represents evaluation, which allows the student to judge the value of the ideas within the framework of what they’ve learned.
3.
Review Mr. Burt’s sample lesson, which is aligned to the learning target, “
Recall the major points of the two stories presented by the reporters
.” Consider and analyze the purpose
of each step. How does Mr. Burt’s organization of the learning tasks (found in steps 1-10) support achievement of this learning target?
The first seven steps he goes through are learning tasks designed to give him an understanding of how well his students understand the material. Step 8 allows the students and teacher an opportunity to check for comprehension and address any deficiencies in the learning. Step 9 repeats the first 7 steps for the second interview. Finally step 10 allows the students to give feedback to the teacher concerning their
understanding of the assignment so far. By aligning his tasks within Bloom’s taxonomy Mr. Burt has established a clearly defined path that will allow the students to get the most out of the material and give him
the ability to check their understanding throughout the assignment.
