1.
Select one topic that you wrote about in a previous discussion that you are interested in examining using the social science lens. These topics come from your discussions about the history, humanities, and natural and applied sciences lenses.
2.
Explain how you might analyze or think about that topic from the perspective of the social science lens. Last week, I decided to focus on natural and applied scientific perspectives by
using a fitness app
to improve my overall health and track my wellness advancements. To illustrate this, I opted for the MyFitnessPal application. MyFitnessPal (2017) offers users the capability to track and document their nutritional selections, physical exertion, and calorie intake. This week, I have decided to pursue the same issue from a social science standpoint in order to further explore it in relation to wellness.
The use of social science perspectives shapes my behavior in terms of maintaining discipline, as I remain focused on the job at hand to assure the achievement of my objective. Utilizing MyFitnessPal enables me to monitor my progress by logging my daily activities and capturing my heart rate, among other metrics.
MyFitnessPal, as a technological tool, offers objectives that extend beyond the mere tracking of calories expended and physical activity. It mirrors changes in societal awareness of health and also represents my own perspective and efforts to maintain my own well-being. Through social science study, it has been shown that the app not only collects data, but also encourages social comparison, fosters a sense of community, and promotes shared norms. In "Mind over Matter: Using Technology to Improve Wellness," Pomputius (2018) emphasizes the impact of technology on shaping health behaviors and the interplay between social and technological factors and individual well-being in the integration of technology into wellness practices. It provides a foundation for understanding how the social science approach might illuminate the broader impacts of health-tracking systems like MyFitnessPal.
The use of technology may be enhanced by using many lenses, such as the natural and applied sciences lens, to provide a holistic view. The natural and applied sciences lenses may assess the accuracy of the app's measurements, the effectiveness of its algorithms, and the overall scientific reliability of the health-related data provided by MyFitnessPal, while the social science lens analyzes the behavioral and societal dimensions.
