One of the best decisions an individual can make during the early part of their careers is
being in mentorship relationship (Davis, 2021). Having a mentor or not having a mentor
can be a make or break for many young professionals as they enter their career. The
purpose of a mentor is to share their time, knowledge, and experience with a mentee
(Davis, 2021). Most of the times the mentor is given the most challenging task which is
the development of the mentee. Effective mentors do a great job of developing trust,
leading with questions, and being skilled enough to help the mentee solve their own
problems without doing the work for them (Davis, 2021). Mentorship can take place in
just about any setting amongst any age group. Most mentors can’t help to solve every
problem and mentees should be aware what a mentor has to offer and what they aren’t
able to offer. When looking for a mentor the right mentor mentees should consider
looking for leadership qualities within a mentor, look at what the mentor has
accomplished, and take a make sure that there is a foundation of trust that has been
established with a potential mentor (Davis, 2021).
One of the factors that shows this reference is proven to be a scholarly reference because
it is written by an author with credentials. Another factor is that information that the
3
author has provided is backed up with research from credible sources. The final factor is
that the article was published in a journal which means it was peer-reviewed.
The research from this article is very foundational when considering what it takes to be a
mentor, what does a mentor mentee relationship looks like, and how to find a mentor.
When considering the heights that mentorship can bring to the life of a mentee and the
depths of how a mentorship and mentee relationship can develop over time, the key
points of this research are very important for my research.
Nacheman, J. S. (2021). Mentorship: Supporting Youth through Turbulent Adolescence.
ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, The New School, p. 98.
The 2021 dissertation by Jacob Nachman starts off by giving a historical account
of
mentorship and follows up with giving readers an understanding of mentorship can be
through the lenses of an experienced mentor leading a mentee through the adolescence
stages of life (Nachman, 2021). The dissertation on Mentorship: Supporting Youth
through Turbulent Adolescence is given from the perspective of providing youth with
mentorship in the role of a parental figure, role model, or life coach. This dissertation is
backed up by data that shows mentees benefit directly from the support of mentors and
when there is mentorship in a young person’s life, it makes a significant difference. This
information can be resourceful for research because it gives a unique account of close
working mentorship and mentee relationships. Being that this is a dissertation, and it has
been published, there has been an extensive publishing process along with a reviewing
process which allows for it to be deemed a scholarly reference.

The Graduate School University of Washington. (2023). What a good mentor does
. Grad.uw

guides-for-students/what-a-good-mentor-does/
The graduate school for the University of Washington has provided a practical guide for
mentors in education. Within this guide The University of Washington has provided what
are the exceptions and qualities of a good mentor. Some of these suggestions include
having availability for students, providing clarity for students, encouraging students, and
respecting students (The Graduate School University of Washington, 2023). The guide
also provides feedback from students that speaks of positive impacts that mentors have
made within their educational journey. This resource can be proven to be resourceful
being that it has been written and published by a renown graduate department. The guide
has also provided information in a way that is replicable which is a requirement for
credible research. For research purposes I find that many of the suggestions within have
been tailored for mentors who are primarily in graduate school but can be applied to
mentors within any arena.
