The Allegory of the Cave Everyone has asked the same or similar questions at some point in their life: What is the point of life? What is it exactly and what does it have to offer me? An ancient Greek philosopher named Plato attempted to explain the nature of this existence through his famous work “The Allegory of the Cave”. The message of Plato’s Cave makes an appearance in many modern day films. His allegory depicts the ignorant of society and the individual quest for true understanding. Similarly
beginning, watching Being John Malkovich felt like falling down a rabbit hole. It is a film in which nothing makes sense, yet a film that is completely relatable. The film opens up on the main protagonist, Craig, a socially awkward and unhappily married puppeteer who can’t find a job. After obtaining work filing at a bizarre company located on the 7 ½ floor, Craig becomes smitten with his coworker, Maxine. One day, he comes upon a portal that leads into to the mind of well-known actor, John Malkovich. Craig

I’d have to say that the deaf theater video changed the way I see the theater. At first glance I thought, “How will this appeal to hearing people,” but they took care of it with the actors who signed and sang/spoke. Their whole concept and style appealed to the deaf community by visualizing the music and sounds through lights, actions, and even smells. Although their method for deaf theater was strange, it shed light on the fact that you don’t need to talk to convey an expression or an emotion. But
In the Socratic dialogue, The Republic, written by the Greek philosopher Plato, the dialogue consists of Socrates describing a hypothetical city-state where a philosopher rules and all is just. In this piece, Plato expresses the importance of knowledge in society and in an individual man. The author uses an allegory to explain how all members of society are educated. Socrates discusses that education and knowledge are the only way one can truly escape the confinement of life. Finally, Socrates elucidates

In a dark cave there are prisoners, restricted to seeing what shadows puppeteers cast upon the stone screen in front of them. This timeless story by Plato, used as a metaphor for those that are, to the philosopher Plato, lowbrows, and have no desire to question what is around them and find the truth and embrace ignorance. I have experienced this first hand, being an exemplification of what it means to not question what I have faith in, or seek more. However, I have also experienced what it is to
to the point that most men do not realise they have limitations placed upon them. Nevertheless men and women do not live their lives, they survive and yet men seem to enjoy life. Therefore women are marionettes, men are puppets and society is the puppeteer. “There’s a wide range” (38) of marionettes and to the men in society; they must have one. A wife that men will select from many; like selecting an item from the vast versions of the same product. Women are a commodity that all men eligible for
Many times in our life we take on roles that are based more on myths and on misconceptions than on fact, for example, gender roles. Since ancient times, it was considered natural for women to give birth (to boys, if possible) and take care of children and the household. Women were often considered unqualified for jobs that required physical strength. Men, on the other hand were the “breadwinner” of the family. He made sure to provide his family with the basic needs, such as food, clothing, protection
