Guion S. Bluford is an African American who was born in Philadelphia, PA on November 22, 1942. He is mostly recognized as being the first African-American in space in the year of 1983. Additionally, he flew three more missions to the space logging a total of 688 hours in space. Throughout his life he has acquired much of knowledge in different fields such as military aviation, aerospace engineering, and business administration. Furthermore, he has also pursued many achievements in the field of military
Have you ever dreamed of going to space, or walking on the moon? Commander Jim Lovell and officers Fred Haise and Jack Swigert did that exact thing. They were the astronauts that went on a moon landing mission aboard Apollo 13. Many people believe that Apollo 13 was a failed mission, since the spacecraft had an explosion and they had to go straight home. Although, many other people believe that it was one of NASA’s greatest successes. Apollo 13 was truly one of NASA’s greatest successes. The first
Apollo 13 Essay Apollo 13 showed teamwork in many ways. First of all, the team of astronauts had to prepare together to show that they were able to handle being in space. They had to go through multiple simulations together until they could successfully fly the shuttle. Unfortunately one team member got sick so they had to change the team a bit. They were upset they didn’t get their original teammate but they showed great teamwork and learned to work with their new addition. The team at the command
Arrogance was also displayed by the pilots throughout the movie. Tom Hanks (Jim Lovell) for example didn’t seem all that amused when Neil Armstrong was taking his first steps on the moon, almost to a sense that he knew he would get his chance. The NASA pilots also displayed that they had an extreme comfort level within their teams. When Ken Mattingly was told that he was going to have to stay behind, Jim Lovell was upset because he didn’t want to work with Jack Swigert. He even mentioned how
moved to the second task: how to get the astronauts home safely. He also avoided error and speculation through self-discipline and thoroughness. At this point, there was enough oxygen in the second system to get the astronauts home safely, but Lovell, one of the astronauts, noticed that the psi (pounds per square inch) level on the pressure gauge for the second system was falling as well. It should normally register at 860, now it was only a 300, only 53 minutes after the initial explosion.
Apollo 13 Apollo 13 launched on April 11, 1970 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The crewmembers aboard the ship were James A. Lovell Jr., John L. Swigert Jr., and Fred W. Haise, Jr. Before the launch, there had been a few problems. Thomas K. Mattingly was supposed to fly on the Apollo 13 but he was exposed to the measles. He didn’t have the antibodies to fight the disease, causing him to not be able to go into space. Swigert took his place. Right before the launch, one of the technicians
astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise aboard Apollo 13 for America 's third Moon landing mission. En route, an on-board explosion deprives their spacecraft of most of its oxygen supply and electric power, forcing NASA 's flight controllers to abort the Moon landing, and turning the mission into a struggle to get the three men home safely. Deke Slayton the boss of astronauts Jim Lovell, informs Jim that he and his crew will fly the Apollo 13 mission instead of Apollo 14. Jim Lovell, Ken Mattingly
The movie, Apollo 13, is a true life story about NASA’s third mission to the moon in1970 that almost left three astronauts stranded in space. On the third day of the mission, an oxygen tank exploded during routine maintenance of the oxygen supply which resulted in three significant problems for the crew: a dissipating oxygen supply, reduced power on board and a damaged air filtering system, leaving the men susceptible to carbon dioxide poisoning. The combined efforts of the crew of the space craft
outer space and they do but when they are in space the gas fails and they are stranded and they can’t go to the moon or earth. Apollo 13 focuses around three characters Jim, Ken and Jack and Fred. Fred is a pilot in the space module. Jim lovell is a cool calm guy in crisis. He is always calm and always is aware of his actions. He is also the leader of the crew.Ken is a beginner astronaut back up for Jim.Also Jack got the flu so he could not go to the moon.
Apollo 13 is a movie where many questions were left unanswered. That could possibly be that the director wanted us to know what the astronauts knew to to make it more realistic. This movie uses astronomy and problem solving to solve many of these unanswered questions. In this essay I will be discussing the following issues; How the astronauts found out about the explosion, some of the problems that came with the explosion, whether it is worth the risk to send humans into space, and what knowledge
