Abstract High speed rail (HSR) is a rapidly expanding new transport mode all over the world and is often described as the “transport mode of the future”. This paper discusses definitions of high speed rail, provides an overview of high speed rail development in selected other countries and regions. It then analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of HSR in several different aspects, such as mobility, choice, environmental, safety, cost and regional feasibility.
