The Berlin wall was often referred to as a symbol of the cold war and the inner conflict of Germany. It showed the different ideologies of the USA and USSR and their systems of government. Officially known as the “Anti-Fascist-Protective Wall” by the east, and the “Wall of Shame” by the West, it physically divided the city of Berlin from August
and work together. Three reasons why I believe that the Berlin Wall is unfortunate is because it blocks freedom, separates families, and it causes problems between neighbors. The first reason on why I believe the Berlin Wall is not beneficial for is that it defeats the purpose of freedom. The wall keeps the people that live in Berlin from traveling anywhere they'd like. For people that can't go somewhere they'd like to because of the wall they will abhor it and can cause affliction in their lives
The Berlin Wall was constructed on August 13, 1961. The reason for this was to separate West and East Germany. People in East Germany received the short end of the stick because “to live in East Germany behind the Berlin Wall meant to live in fear and distrust” (Wagner). The Stasi (state security service) monitored citizens for fear of rebellion. Many students and college graduates tried to cross over but only a few were successful. Those who were not were fined, prosecuted, or even murdered. The
The Berlin Wall divided people from their families, neighborhoods, work and homes between the years of 1961 and 1989, and was constructed by the German Democratic Republic or GDR, which divided Berlin into two divisions, East Germany and West Germany. The wall completely cut off West Germany from the surrounding East Germany, until November 1989 Government officials opened it, and then the official demolition began on 13 June 1990 and was completed in 1992. The wall had barrier consisting of guard
The Berlin Wall The years following the fall of the Berlin wall brought Germany closer together as one country. The east side of Berlin was communist, whereas the west side was socialist/democratic. Khrushchev ordered for the construction of the Berlin Wall. This was built entirely on East Berlin soil but surrounded West Berlin to stop the East Berliners from crossing (and fleeing) into West Berlin. There are other reasons why the wall was built, such as Kennedy’s refusal to back down from Khrushchev’s threats and the need to prevent a nuclear war. One reason as to why the Berlin Wall was built is that East Berliners were escaping to West Berlin. The conditions in the two halves of the city were
that Berlin awoke to find that the East German Army had begun to place a barbed wire fence that would cut off West Berlin from East Germany. When the wall was built, millions of East Germans were prevented from fleeing to West Berlin. This mass emigration was occurring because the economic and political situation in East Germany was poor and the people were fleeing to West Germany where the conditions were better. In the third paragraph, the United States rejects the building of the wall as it
As part of the division of Germany following WWII, Berlin, the capital of Germany was divided evenly between the two nations. However, the entire city of Berlin was deep inside of the GDR, so the Western half of the city was democratic but it was surrounded by communist territory. This made West Berlin a place where many East Germans would try to escape to. As a result of this the German Democratic Republic built a wall surrounding West Berlin to stop its own people from escaping to freedom. In
The Berlin Wall For twenty-eight years, the Berlin Wall separated friends, families, and a nation. It was a symbol of the Cold War. The Wall was separating the Eastern and Western side. This wall was a way of separating the three zones controlled by France, Britain and America. This separation occurred after World War II. The Berlin Wall was something of a propaganda disaster for the Soviet Union and East Germany; it showed the communist to be tyrannical in the way they controlled the movement (The
1961, the Communist government of the German Democratic Republic and volunteer construction workers of East Germany began to seal all points of entrance into West Berlin with miles of barbed wire, concrete, and stationed soldiers. “Antifaschistischer Schutzwall”, as they called it, or the “anti-fascist bulwark.” The purpose of this Berlin Wall was to keep Western fascists from entering the socialist state of East Germany, and to prevent Easterners from pouring out of the USSR-occupied zone.
