If Michael’s name is meant to conjure the name of the archangel Michael, it can’t be ignored that one of the brothers of that archangel is Satan. Viewing the name this way creates a parallel which makes Michael’s nephew a quasi-son of evil. Because of the nephew’s “industrious life” (212), he is disconnected from the land and therefore amoral.
