This paper discusses the five different perspectives of psychology and why the cognitive approach is the best method. The different perspectives are behaviorist, psychodynamic, humanistic, cognitive, and biological. The behaviorist perspective is concerned with how environmental factors, called stimuli affect observable behavior, called the response (McLeod, 2007). The psychodynamic perspective explains that human behavior is determined by the unconscious mind and childhood experiences (McLeod, 2007)
system. While reading this book, I noticed two very important theoretical perspectives: the Psychodynamic Theory, which is apart of the Family Systems Model, which is on the micro level, and the humanistic theory, which is apart of the Family Resilience Theory and on the macro level. These two theories tie into The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down and Lia Lee and her family’s life. The Psychodynamic Theory has three key concepts that include differentiation of self, triangulation, and family
of the efficacy of these treatments. The person-centred approach is grounded in the concepts of humanistic psychology and its view of people as autonomous and capable of resolving their difficulties, realising their potential, and changing their lives in positive ways (Seligman, 2006). Carl Rogers, a humanistic psychologist and major contributor of the person-centred approach questioned the effectiveness of the traditional directive approach to psychotherapy. He proposed that therapy
recognized and felt in a way which they have not been before. The aim of psychodynamic counselling is to increase the client’s capacity to use and accept more aspects of themselves; to free their process of thought and feeling and to remove existent damaging restrictions on them. New, better possibilities for dealing with internal and external remain after counselling ends. It has long been recognized that psychodynamic psychotherapy is highly effective and leads to long-term changes, preserving
The term psychodynamic covers Freud's original theory and later theories based on Freud's work, such as those of Alder (1927), Erikson (1950) and Jung (1964). These theories argue that behaviour is shaped by the dynamic interaction of drives and forces within the individual, particularly in the unconscious mind, we'll concentrate on Freud's theory of psychoanalysis (Freud, 1949) as one example of the psychodynamic approach. Freud claimed that the mind is made up of three parts: the concious, the
According to the psychoanalytic/psychodynamic perspective the root causes of psychopathology are usually attributed to some conflict among the id (pleasure principle), ego (reality principle), and superego (conscious) as well as early relationships/experiences. For the case of Cindy, a psychoanalyst could probably attribute her eating disorder to her early formative relationships with her dysfunctional family which resulted in multiple attachment issues. For example, her case states that as a result
This essay will evaluate the two approaches of counselling, techniques and skills critically. These approaches of counselling will be applied to secondary school from the ages 11-16 year olds. The essay will outline the strengths and weaknesses of both counselling methods and how the counselling approaches help to build relationship with the teacher and student in counselling. Compare and contrast the various personality theories: Psychodynamic perspective, Behavioral and Social Cognitive perspective, Humanistic perspective, and Trait perspective) and discuss which perspective you think is most applicable. Support your argument (based on what you learned, examples, etc). Psychodynamic Perspectives- view personality as being primarily unconscious and as developing in stages. Psychodynamic theorists believe that behavior is merely a surface characteristic and that to
this is the result of parental guidance. Just as ego grew from id, so does superego grow from ego. Superego presents morals to these impulses and tells us right from wrong by shaping the conscience. Psychodynamic Therapists have developed several therapies based off of the branches of the psychodynamic model of behavior. Whichever therapy is chosen to help the patient work through their underlying conflicts, a series of techniques are used to reach that point. To start, a patient is asked to describe
