(III) A spring (k = 75 N/m) has an equilibrium length of 1.00 m. The spring is compressed to a length of 0.50 m and a mass of 2.0 kg is placed at its free end on a frictionless slope which makes an angle of 41° with respect to the horizontal (Fig. 8–38). The spring is then released. (a) If the mass is not attached to the spring, how far up the slope will the mass move before coming to rest? (b) If the mass is attached to the spring, how far up the slope will the mass move before coming to rest? (c) Now the incline has a coefficient of kinetic friction μk. If the block, attached to the spring, is observed to stop just as it reaches the spring’s equilibrium position, what is the coefficient of friction μk?

- Check Your Understanding Find x(t) for the mass-spring system in Example 8.11 ii the particle starts from x0=0 at t=0. what is the particle’s initial velocity?arrow_forwardJane, whose mass is 50.0 kg, needs to swing across a river (having width D) filled with person-eating crocodiles to save Tarzan from danger. She must swing into a wind exerting constant horizontal force F, on a vine having length L and initially making an angle with the vertical (Fig. P7.81). Take D = 50.0 m, F = 110 N, L = 40.0 m, and = 50.0. (a) With what minimum speed must Jane begin her swing to just make it to the other side? (b) Once the rescue is complete, Tarzan and Jane must swing back across the river. With what minimum speed must they begin their swing? Assume Tarzan has a mass of 80.0 kg.arrow_forwardA block of mass 0.250 kg is placed on top of a light, vertical spring of force constant 5 000 N/m and pushed downward so that the spring is compressed by 0.100 m. After the block is released from rest, it travels upward and then leaves the spring. To what maximum height above the point of release does it rise?arrow_forward
- Can the power expended by a force be negative?arrow_forwardIf a spring is stretched so far that it is permanently deformed, itsforce is no longer conservative. Why?arrow_forward. (III) An engineer is designing a spring to be placed at thebottom of an elevator shaft. If the elevator cable breakswhen the elevator is at a height h above the top of thespring, calculate the value that the spring constant k shouldhave so that passengers undergo an acceleration of no morethan 5.0 g when brought to rest. Let M be the total massof the elevator and passengers.arrow_forward
- (III) A block of mass m is attached to the end of a spring (spring stiffness constant k), Fig. 6–43. The mass is given an initial displacement xo from equilibrium, and an initial speed vp. Ignoring friction and the mass of the spring, use energy methods to find (a) its maximum speed, and (b) its maximum stretch from equilibrium, in terms of the given quantities. - (c) A large roller in the form of a uniform cylinder is pulled by a tractor to compact earth; it has a 180-cm diameter and weighs 10 kN. When the 6-kg box reaches point A it has a speed of vA = 2 m/s. Determine the angle 0 at which it leaves the smooth circular ramp and the distance s to where it falls into the cart. Neglect friction.
